Unit 7 Happy Birthday!
Section 6 Reading Plus
Content Analysis
This lesson includes three texts, which are birthday cards written by people of different identities. Specifically, the cards contain birthday wishes from a father to his son, a daughter to her mother, and a friend to another friend, all conveying sincere affection for family members and friends. This content corresponds perfectly to the core question of the unit: a birthday is not only a celebration for oneself, but also a special day to cherish the people we love.
Through the analysis of these texts, guide students to reflect on why people celebrate birthdays and what birthdays truly mean. Every birthday is a gift from life. On this special day of turning a year older, we can look back on the past, cherish the present, express gratitude to our parents, treasure our friendships, look forward to the future, and send our warmest wishes to each other.
The three texts in this lesson all take the form of birthday cards. Each card combines birthday wishes with sincere personal feelings, showing different emotional connections:
— Father’s love for his son: It conveys tolerance and deep affection, like “Sometimes you do drive me up the wall with your loud music. But I wouldn’t change a thing about you.”
— Friend’s admiration for a friend: It expresses appreciation for the friend’s personality, such as “You laugh all the time, and you have no worries — you’re everything I want in a friend.”
— Daughter’s gratitude to her mother: It shows heartfelt thanks for maternal care, as in “Thank you so much for taking care of me and loving me every day.”
