I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue(队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. “We made it,” he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bank card. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry.”

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. Hearing my words, he frowned slightly. “Don't worry. I'll cover your bus fare,” he said, smiling reassuringly. Gunter pulled cash out of his pocket and handed it over, “Here's for your bus to Prague. Take it.” Faced with his help, I felt a wave of gratitude washing over me. “Thank you so much! I'll pay you back when I return to Vienna!” I promised, gripping the cash tightly. Before waving goodbye and heading for the bus, I wrote down Gunter's phone number, determined to keep my promise.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. “Hey! It's you!” he answered, his voice full of delight and surprise. After a brief conversation, we arranged to meet at the airport. Upon meeting, I handed him an envelope with the fare cash. To my astonishment, Gunter slowly shook his head and then pushed the envelope back to me. “Keep it. Pay it forward someday,” he smiled, warmth glinting in his eyes. In that moment, I realized his kindness had planted a seed of gratitude in me. Moved by his gesture, I vowed to carry this spirit forward and spread goodwill wherever I went.

It was June, the last day of school. My class of first-graders was feverishly anticipating their summer vacation. To add a joyful flavor, I had some balloons brought in, but for me, this holiday was bittersweet. I'd just moved to this city and couldn't afford to fly back to accompany Dad. He was desperately missing me, for it was his first summer without me.
When switching off the light on my way out, I noticed the balloons near the window. Unsure what to do with them, I grabbed the thirteen strings and stuffed them into the backseat of my car. Their rainbow of colors lifted my spirits and gratefully, I didn't feel so alone.
As the city was still foreign to me, I decided to go for a drive and soon found myself winding down a stretch of road where the trees overhead covered each other. The branches reminded me of two friends stretching out to greet each other. Before long, a retirement home appeared. It was a place with a feeling of forgottenness and I spotted a man sitting alone in the shade outside.
I felt a sudden urge to pull in. But the balloons in my backseat blocked my view—then I knew what to do with them. Opening the door and grabbing one of the strings, I waved to the man, and he smiled. His name was Daniel and he was about Dad's age. When I handed him the balloon, he grinned(咧嘴笑),“Thanks. It gives a little color to my life.” While tying it to his chair, he
looked happier than when I arrived. So I smiled, “You're welcome, Daniel. Perhaps I'll see you again sometime.”
Unexpectedly, he replied, “Perhaps, but probably not. Visitors are always welcome, but rarely come.” His words forced me to slide over an old chair next to his. Then we began chatting about our lives and his voice always reminded me of Dad. I'd thought it would be boring talking with a stranger. But it wasn't; it was enlightening—I had been feeling lonely, and so had Daniel, and so had the residents in the retirement home.

Overwhelmed with excitement, the elders received the surprise with trembling hands. “Thank you. You've made this place less lonely,” Daniel said, patting my shoulder. Never had I expected that a small kindness could matter so much. At that moment, it dawned on me that our bond had improved both our lives. Thinking of my father, I knew he'd be proud I'd connected with others.

Last summer, Hilda worked as a volunteer with dolphin trainers at a sea life park. Her job was to make sure the tanks were free of any items so that the trainers could train the dolphins to fetch specific items. However, one day after cleaning, one of the dolphins, Maya, presented Hilda with a candy wrapper from the tank. When Katherine, the trainer, saw this, she blamed Hilda for her carelessness. Upset but not discouraged by this event, Hilda decided to do some spying on Maya.
The next morning, Hilda arrived at the park early. She put on her scuba gear(水下呼吸器) and jumped into the tank for her usual, underwater sweep. Finding nothing in the tank, she climbed out of the water just in time to see Katherine jumping in on the other side. After what happened yesterday, Hilda knew what she was doing. She watched as Katherine performed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn't surprised when she surfaced empty-handed.
During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and swam to the back part of the tank where the filter(过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away. What was Maya doing back there Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and swam over to take a look behind the box, and her question was answered. Hilda then swam across the tank following Maya's path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear. As Katherine turned around, her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb(梳子) in her mouth waiting for her treat.
“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish. “I know where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, resting place. “What's all this?” Katherine asked, obviously confused.

Katherine glanced at Maya with a mixture of disbelief and suspicion. Determined to prove her point, Hilda picked up the comb and tossed it gently into the water. Maya quickly darted towards it, grabbing it in her mouth and swimming away playfully. The moment Hilda and Katherine arrived at the back of the tank, Katherine's eyes widened in shock. Never had Katherine imagined that she would see the comb that Maya had just retrieved.
Now Katherine realized what had been going on. She burst out of the water, cheeks flushing with embarrassment and surprise. “Sorry, I was so wrong about you,” she said to Hilda, her voice filled with genuine regret. “It's okay. None of us expected Maya to be such a little magician,” Hilda replied, a shy smile spreading across her face. Meanwhile, Maya circled around them happily, leaping out of the water now and then as if celebrating the resolution of the misunderstanding. Her joyful splashes echoed throughout the tank, creating a playful atmosphere that melted the tension completely.

In Los Angeles, California, there was an aquarium(水族馆) called “Ocean Wonders Aquarium”, located along the scenic coastline. The aquarium was home to a wide variety of ocean creatures, attracting countless visitors who were amazed at the colorful tropical(热带) fish, slow-moving seahorses, graceful jellyfish, and intelligent dolphins. However, the aquarium had to go through a major restoration, and as of December 1st last year, it closed its doors to the public. The construction was expected to last until the summer, with the entire project taking more than six months to complete.
Without visitors, the aquarium grew extremely quiet and felt like an empty space. The animals, who were used to human interaction every day, now saw very few human faces, only the familiar caretakers. Something strange began to happen. The dolphins, once energetic and lively, seemed tired, lacking the usual enthusiasm they had for play.
One morning, after the caretaker Amanda threw small fish into the dolphins' tank, the dolphins swam lazily to the tank walls and barely showed any interest in their favorite meals. They stared blankly into the distance, their usual excitement absent. “Something's not right,” Amanda whispered to herself.
Dr Harris was called in to investigate. He examined the dolphins and initially suspected digestive issues. “Perhaps we should reduce their food intake,” he suggested. “Give them smaller amounts of food and see if that helps with any potential digestive discomfort.”
But after a few days, there was no improvement. The dolphins continued to suffer, showing no interest in food or play. Disappointed and worried, John, a senior caretaker, gathered the team. “What should we do?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Then, one of the caretakers posed an idea: “Could it be that the dolphins are lonely without the visitors?”

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse all night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny, and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. To my astonishment, I had won the writing contest and was invited to attend the award presentation. So unexpected was the news that for a moment, I couldn't believe the truth. On the award presentation ceremony, when my name was called, I walked onto the stage, my legs trembling slightly under the spotlight. The moment I grasped the trophy and certificate, a sense of pride and accomplishment washed over me. Never had I imagined that my writing, which had once been a source of struggle and frustration, would receive such recognition.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. “Without your guidance, I couldn't have achieved this,” I said, my voice filled with gratitude. He smiled warmly, his eyes twinkling with pride. “You deserve it. All your effort, persistence, and focus on getting better have finally been rewarded,” he said, patting me on the back. Overwhelmed with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation, I realized that this experience would stay with me for a lifetime. In my freshman year of college, I had a habit of sitting in the same spot every day in my economics class. It was a comfortable little corner near the window, where the sunlight would stream in and warm the desk. I loved this spot because it gave me a sense of routine and comfort during the busy college life.
One day, as I settled into my usual seat, I noticed a new face sitting next to me. She was a foreign exchange student named Mia, who had just arrived
from Italy. Her English was basic, and the most complex sentence I had heard her say was, “I love this sunny weather!” Despite the language barrier, Mia always greeted me with a bright smile and a cheerful “Morning, Alex!” every day.
Mia had a habit of spreading her belongings across my desk space. Her notebooks, snacks, and even her colourful scarf would somehow find their way onto my side. Each time I walked into class, Mia would quickly realize her mistake, flash an apologetic smile, and say, “Oh, Alex! Sorry, sorry!” while hurriedly clearing my space. She would then give a nod and ask, “Ready for class, yeah?”
Initially, I found this routine mildly annoying. I thought to myself, “Why can't she keep her things on her side Doesn't she know I sit here every day?” The last thing I wanted was to deal with a guy who barely spoke my language at eight in the morning. Just get your stuff off my desk!
One particularly busy morning, I arrived a few minutes late to class. As I stood outside the classroom, finishing a quick phone call, I noticed through the window that my desk was, as usual, occupied by Mia's things. However, before I could enter, another student, also running late, walked into the room and headed straight for my seat.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend's farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird(蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs(蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering(悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good-bye.”

Just as the saying goes, “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.” This experience taught me that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
【参考范文】
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it, my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider-webs. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn't help wondering how she was getting on now. Had she managed to find her way back home, or was she still out there struggling to survive
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, her beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature. At that moment, it dawned on me that even the smallest acts of kindness can create profound connections with the natural world.

I was incredibly proud of my school, the Maplewood Elementary. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here.
So, when our teacher Mr Dow announced a group project to create a brochure(小册子) about our school for its 100 anniversary, I was thrilled. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was.
I was paired with two classmates: Jake, who loved photography, and Lily, who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I'm not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought.
At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn't started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared.
Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can't do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.”

Noticing surprise on every face, we couldn't wait to hear Mr Dow's announcement of the winner. “This work isn't just for the school anniversary,” he finally said, tapping our names on the cover. “It's how school spirit lives through students' cooperation.” It was then that we truly understood how our combined talents had created what none of us could alone.

“What is your name?” is a question most frequently asked when people meet for the first time. But for me, it was the first challenge I encountered as an international student in Ireland.
The pronunciation system of the Chinese language is quite different from that of English. For native speakers of English, some Chinese words are rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu(秋雨), for instance, happened to be a great challenge for many of them. Every time I gave a self-introduction, I had to explain how to pronounce my name at least five times, yet they still could not say it the way I did.
Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty classmates. I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter. I feared that my classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me. After all, I did care about how others would think of me. I realized that if I didn't stop, the entire lecture would be ruined. “It's okay, professor,” I shrugged(耸肩). The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into laughter. I forced a smile, unsure how to respond further.
After that incident, I stopped acting as a “Chinese teacher”. Instead of correcting others when they were struggling to pronounce my name, I just smiled and nodded approvingly. This approach spared me the discomfort of having to over-explain. However, I soon found that by doing so, I might be losing something more important: the opportunity to share a small part of my cultural identity.

I was born into a nuclear family. It was just parents and me. Over the years I've noticed how well my parents manage to look after their health and how healthy they are. I had never bothered to follow their example or been that curious about the secret of their good health. I never realized what a great resource they could be.
I would look at them both, so slim, strong and healthy—much more so than me—and think, how will I ever get to be like them I'm constantly impressed by their toughness. They have never taken any sick days from work, unless they really need to. They don't need to visit the doctor much. Their habits are deep-rooted and work for them.
Part of their success is how efficiently they control what they eat. Their diet is extremely healthy and they stick to it. For breakfast, it's porridge; lunch is salad or a wholemeal sandwich with butter, garlic, raw onion and black pepper. Dinner is boiled vegetables, or beans. Both of them grew up eating fresh, unprocessed food.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works part-time as a sales assistant. My dad started skipping at the age of six. He's now a mini celebrity and admired by people worldwide with thousands of followers on social media. And my mum has won fitness competitions at the gym.
In this respect, I was the complete opposite. I hated fitness and was lazy and unfit. Last week I had a health scare; I found a lump(肿块) on my neck. After an examination, it turned out to be fatty tissue, which isn't harmful but unless I lose weight, or I have surgery, it could get worse. My parents said to me: don't get surgery, let us train you and you'll feel much better. I wanted to take the easy option and have it removed. But I also thought, maybe this was an eye-opener and a wake-up call for me to start getting fit.

典例 (2025全国一卷) 限时:25分钟
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn't counted on: my brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece's small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn't want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn't happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn't heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he'll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience(良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother's shoes. He was facing health issues, and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

Step 5 完成完整写作
I realized it was me who was at fault. Little did I consider how crucial Toby was to my brother. With the image of him leaving with Toby in the rain replaying in my mind, I felt a wave of regret surging through me. Then my wife came, holding homemade biscuits. She placed them in my hands, eyes brimming with warmth and encouragement. “Go talk to him and make it right,” she said, her voice like a gentle breeze. Moved by her thoughtfulness, so grateful was I that I held her hands tightly and nodded firmly. Determined to apologize, I headed towards my brother's house.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's door. Having taken a deep breath, I raised my hand and knocked. The moment my brother opened the door, he looked surprised. “I am so sorry. These are for you and Toby,” I said, holding up the biscuits with trembling hands. Toby bounded over, wagging his tail and nudging my hand with his nose. To my astonishment, after a silence, my brother took the biscuits. He then pulled me into a hug, smiling. At that moment, I vowed to care more about my family and to never let misunderstandings come between us.

Amanda and Susie, though sisters with a two-year age gap, had never got along. From the minute Susie was born, Amanda knew the baby disliked her.
As Susie grew, she hated Amanda for telling her how to do things. Amanda viewed Susie as spoilt, because she was the youngest in the family. At secondary school, Amanda shone at English; Susie was a maths whizz. Each made the other feel inadequate. When Amanda turned fifteen, Susie was angry when her sister was allowed to go to the youth club disco. Perhaps that was why Susie married so young—anything to beat her sister down the aisle. But Amanda got her revenge. When it was her turn, she chose a bridesmaid whose hair clashed with Susie's at her wedding.
Now, despite being in their fifties, these grievances(牢骚) were still fresh in the sisters' minds. The only thing they had in common was that they both loved their mother deeply.
Then one day, her father rang with the terrible news that their mother had died suddenly. Both sisters were stricken with grief, but Susie was also upset that their father hadn't informed her first.
Then their father told them about their mother's will. “She's left you the painting,” he said to them both. The painting—a portrait of the sisters by the mother—was the source of one of their biggest childhood arguments. To their surprise, it was bequeathed(遗赠) to both. “Your mom hopes that you each have it for six months and then swap, for the rest of your lives,” added the father.
“We live miles apart. We could get it delivered,” said Susie. “It's against the will,” their father replied. “‘I love to look at it, especially now you've both left home,’ your mom used to say. Now it felt like the last link to her.”
For the sake of their beloved mother, the two sisters began the cyclic keeping of the painting. This time it was Susie's turn to deliver the painting.

Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business. Therefore, he was left in the care of Mrs Hill, an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the 12-year-old to be a good boy. He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things. Mrs Hill was asleep. Kevin sighed(叹息) and hoped something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a movement outside caught his eye.
Mrs Hill's front window faced Mr and Mrs Green's house across the street. The couple had both gone to work, so it was strange that someone was over there. Kevin stared at the man at their front door. Suddenly, the man jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth, Kevin grabbed Mrs Hill's home phone and called the police.
Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived, Kevin decided to do something. He rushed out of Mrs Hill's house and crossed the street quickly. Grabbing a branch from a cut-down tree, he jumped in through the window. “Stop right there! You must leave right now!” he called out, holding the branch with both hands.
The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief. “Hey, kid, put that down. It was my home. My parents used to live here and my father's watch was here,” he explained, trying to lift a floorboard.
At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed(回响) in the air. The man stood up in a panic, then ran through the house toward the window and jumped out. Kevin followed out and told the arriving police officers what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man.
Kevin went back to Mrs Hill's house. Somehow he wasn't sure he had done the right thing. “What if he has told the truth?” he thought to himself. The man's words sounded pretty convincing.

When Mr and Mrs Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. Gathering all his courage, Kevin knocked on the door. Footsteps came, and the Greens opened the door. “Mr Green, something happened while you were away,” Kevin stammered, explaining he had witnessed someone breaking into their house. Mr Green's eyes widened in shock, but he stayed calm. Guided by Kevin's trembling finger, they went to where the man tried lifting the floorboard. Mr Green knelt down and opened it. To their astonishment, there lay a watch. “We have to go to the police,” Mr Green said, his voice filled with determination.
Kevin and Mr Green took the watch they had found to the police station. Handing the watch to an officer, Mr Green explained the situation. The officer listened attentively, his eyes narrowing in thought. “We'll look into this thoroughly,” the officer assured them, patting Kevin's shoulder. With a deep sigh, Kevin felt a wave of relief wash over him, the weight of the past few hours fading. As they left the station, Kevin reflected: standing up for what was right, even scared, was worth it. His courage had made a difference, and that was a feeling he would cherish forever.

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings(刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather's rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February's page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa's voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches(草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved(弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month's newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo—the curved spoon, Timmy's smile, and Grandpa's young handwriting on the back: Timmy's first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.

Grandfather sat in front of the camera, narrating stories behind his sketches and furniture. “These have souls,” he said, stroking them tenderly. He talked of the park benches, the curved spoon and the love and labour poured into each creation. The video went viral, with thousands of likes and shares. People left heartfelt comments, saying the stories echoed with their memories. Never had Clara expected that there could be so many positive reactions. And to her astonishment, one day, she received a message from Timmy, who recognized Grandfather and wanted to visit.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. ______________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Upon seeing Grandfather, Timmy rushed over, hugged him and cried. “Thank you. Without you, I wouldn't be where I am,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “Your success is my greatest pride. Modern design can learn from traditional craftsmanship,” Grandfather replied, patting Timmy's shoulder. Watching the heartfelt reunion, Clara felt joy washing over her. She pulled out her phone to record the touching scene, a radiant smile spreading across her face. At that moment, it dawned on her that mixing old craftsmanship with new technology let her keep Grandfather's handicrafts alive.
