Additionally, students are expected to reflect on the deeper significance behind their actions following participation in practical activities. During the implementation of project-based tasks, students are required not only to flexibly apply the target language of this unit but also to explore ways to make the group birthday celebration more meaningful.
In Activity 3a, students are required to use the target language of this unit — specifically, special questions introduced by “when” — to survey their group members’ birthdays and record the names and dates in the monthly columns. In Activity 3b, students need to count the number of classmates born in the current month. Activity 3c guides students to discuss how to plan a meaningful group birthday celebration through guided questions. Activity 3d serves as the stage for students to present their plans and conduct a selection; this activity can assess students’ overall ability to apply the target language. Step 1. Lead-in 1. Show some pictures of festivals in each month. 2. Play a video about ordinal numbers, then have students ask and answer each other about their birthdays using the target date expressions. Observe the pictures and review the names of months based on the festivals. Review date expressions by repeating the ordinal numbers aloud after watching the video. To stimulate students’ learning interest, introduce the birthday-themed topic, and activate the link between their prior knowledge and the class content.
Step 2. Designing T: Good news, everyone! We’re going to have a meaningful class birthday party soon. But how can we make our celebration special and unforgettable Today, let’s work together to plan the perfect one! 1. Have students collaborate in groups to complete the birthday survey and prepare a report. Provide a clear report structure to support them. 2. Guide students to check the birthday information collected in the group survey, and identify the classmates whose birthdays fall in the current month. 3. Play the song Happy Birthday to You and lead students in singing together to celebrate the classmates whose birthdays fall in December. 4. Pose guiding questions to lead students in drafting the birthday celebration plans. 1) When would we like to have the celebration On weekdays or weekends In the morning, afternoon or evening 2) Where shall we hold the celebration 3) Who would we like to invite to the celebration * Deep thinking 1) What can you do for your moms on your birthdays Don’t forget — your birthdays are also special to them! 2) What kind of birthday celebration can truly be meaningful and memorable Work in groups. Find out the birthdays of the group members and write down their names and dates on the calendar. Sa: In our group, Alice’s birthday is on ... David’s and Peter’s birthdays are in the same month. ... Find out whose birthdays fall in the current month, and write them down on the calendar. Join in singing the song Happy Birthday to You together and send warm birthday wishes to the classmates whose birthdays fall in December. Draft a detailed and meaningful plan for the group birthday celebration, then discuss and share the ideas with the class. Sa: We can celebrate at a proper time. Sb: We should celebrate it with our beloved classmates and teachers. Reflect on the questions raised by the teacher. S1: I can make a handwritten card for my mom to thank her for giving birth to me. S2: A meaningful celebration isn’t about fancy gifts — it’s about spending time with the people we love. To consolidate students’ mastery of date and ordinal number knowledge, cultivate their collaborative and information-organizing abilities through group tasks like surveys and report preparation. To enhance classroom warmth via collective birthday singing, stimulate their practical thinking with guiding questions for logical celebration plans, and enable flexible language application in real-life scenarios. To guide students to recognize birthdays’ special meaning to mothers and explore the true essence of a meaningful celebration.
Step 3. Discussing & Reporting 1. Have students discuss their birthday celebration plans in groups. 2. Invite group representatives to present their plans, and provide sample sentence structures to support them. 3. Introduce clear evaluation criteria and guide students to vote for the best celebration plan. Discuss the group’s birthday celebration plan thoroughly in groups. Select a representative to present the group’s plan using the provided sentence structures. Sa: In our group, we think it will be a good idea to have the class birthday party at ... Refer to the given evaluation criteria to vote for the best birthday celebration plan. To boost students’ collaborative skills via group discussions, hone their presentation abilities with guided sentence structures, and foster their critical thinking through standardized voting.
Step 4. Homework Must do: Polish your group report according to the checklist and share the revised version with your classmates. Choose-to-do: 1. Refine the activity plan for the class birthday party, with detailed items including a shopping list and specific on-site activities. 2. Write a short post to introduce the class birthday party to others after the event takes place. To help students improve their reports by using the checklist, meet different students’ needs with optional tasks, and let them practice using English through planning and writing.
