Content Analysis
This period covers the listening and speaking section of Section A. This part comprises three conversations. In the first conversation, Fu Xing sends birthday wishes to Helen. Helen then takes the opportunity to ask Fu Xing about her birthday and age, and invites her to her birthday party. In the second conversation, Teng Fei doesn’t know what birthday gift to give his father, so he asks Ella for advice. In the third conversation, Peter asks Meimei about Ms Gao’s birthday, as he wants to perform for her on her special day.
Through the three conversations, students will be able to master English expressions related to birthdays and improve their listening and speaking skills. On this once-a-year special occasion, they will learn to express their wishes, ask about ages and dates, and master other daily communication skills. At the same time, by learning these birthday-related English expressions, students can develop a sense of caring for others, cultivate a positive emotional attitude, and learn to cherish the time spent with friends and family. In the process of preparing a birthday surprise for Ms. Gao, students need to unleash their creativity, come up with unique celebration ideas, and develop innovative thinking skills.
The dialogue is structured in the form of simple questions and answers, incorporating the core target language of this unit: wh-questions introduced by “when” for asking about dates and times, as well as date expressions. Meanwhile, it reviews wh-questions introduced by “how old” for asking about age and those introduced by “why” for asking about reasons. The dialogue also presents three ways to celebrate a birthday, namely holding a party, giving a birthday card, and singing songs and playing the guitar for the birthday person. The progression of conversational turns also reflects the speakers’ good communication and interpersonal skills. In addition, the three dialogues embody the “Politeness Principle” that conversations should follow.
