On the morning of his 1,500-meter race at the 1968 Games, the determined runner Kip Keino of Kenya found himself in a rather awful situation. He was seated in the backseat of a somewhat shabby taxi, making his way to the Olympic Stadium in the bustling city of Mexico City.
He was understandably worried. The city was in the grip of a massive traffic congestion. Everywhere he looked, there were traffic jams stretching as far as the eye could see. The honking of horns filled the air, creating a chaotic symphony. His taxi, a small vehicle amidst the sea of larger cars, buses, and other taxis, was barely inching forward.
Keino, with a furrowed brow, kept looking ahead at the long line of cars in front of him. The vehicles were bumper-to-bumper, and the drivers seemed frustrated, some impatiently drumming their fingers on the steering wheels.
It was an hour before his race, and he took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. As time ticked away, he could feel unease creeping up on him. Forty minutes passed — the taxi barely moved. Twenty minutes before the race, Keino’s heart began to pound faster. He could see people on the sidewalks, some in Olympic-themed clothing, walking toward the stadium with excited expressions. Meanwhile, he was still stuck in the traffic.
Finally, it was only ten minutes before the start of the race, and to his disappointment, the taxi was still two kilometers away from the stadium. Considering the current traffic situation, the distance seemed almost impossible to cover. What’s worse, earlier that morning, even before getting into the taxi, he had been worried that the pain in his stomach might affect his performance.

His stomach twisted sharply, but he gritted his teeth, refusing to slow down. Pedestrians turned their heads as he dashed past, some shouting encouragement when they noticed his Olympic uniform. Two kilometers had never felt so long. Every breath scraped against his lungs, but the thought of the starting gun — and the dream he had trained for — beat louder than the pain. Step by step, he pushed forward, running a race that no one else could see.

When Keino hurriedly ran into the stadium, other players were ready for the race. Their heads turned as he stumbled in, sweat-soaked and breathing hard, his face pale but determined. A judge rushed toward him, startled, but he held up a trembling hand. “I’m here,” he managed. The track stretched before him, bright under the stadium lights, and suddenly the chaos of the city fell away. He stepped into his lane, the ache in his stomach pulsing, yet his resolve settling like stone. He had already conquered the hardest part — getting here. As the starter raised the gun, Keino lifted his eyes. Whatever happened next, he would run with every last piece of strength he had left.
