To compare two or more things, we use comparative and superlative adjectives or adverbs. We usually add -er and -est to words to make comparatives and superlatives.

（Comparative and superlative）
形容词（Adjectives）
英语中的形容词有原级、比较级和最高级三种形式。表示“比……更……”的概念时，用比较级；表示“最……”的概念时，用最高级。
e.g. Danny is much taller this year.
Victoria Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world.
形容词比较级和最高级的构成方法如下表：

单音节词一般在词尾加 -er 或 -est fast faster fastest

副词（Adverbs）
副词比较级和最高级的构成及用法与形容词基本相同，只是在副词最高级前的定冠词the可以省略。其构成和用法举例如下：
1．在单音节词和少数双音节词词尾，比较级加-er，最高级加-est。
e.g. hard—harder—hardest slow—slower—slowest early—earlier—earliest
In his later years, he worked even harder.
But we can finish the job earlier with more volunteers.
2．在两个及两个以上音节词的前面，比较级加more，最高级加most。
e.g. carefully—more carefully carefully—most carefully

3．下列副词的比较级和最高级的变化不规则，需特殊记忆。
