On June 5 each year, our class celebrates a special
event: World Environment Day (WED). For over
50 years, the United Nations has encouraged
people from all over the world to take care of the
environment. Each year, WED has a different theme
that focuses on some of the most serious environmental problems of our time.
The theme this year in our school was reducing plastic pollution. First, we went outside and collected garbage left on the school grounds. Then, our teacher helped us brainstorm ways to use less plastic in the classroom.
“We could bring our own lunch boxes instead of plastic bags,” said Li Ming.

“We can use colouring pencils instead of plastic highlighters and buy school things that come in cardboard boxes instead of plastic ones,” suggested Wang Mei.
“Those are both great ideas!” said the teacher. Then, she told us that World Environment Day is a great reminder for everyone to take care of the world around us. It brings attention to the problems that are harming the planet!
“Protecting the planet is very important. Over 150 countries in the world take part in World Environment Day, but the earth needs help every day”, added the teacher.
Can one person protect the whole planet No. But if everyone makes at least one small change each day, imagine how the world will be in a year, five years, or twenty years!
