Yang Jun’ao, a 16-year-old student from Nanxian County, Hunan Province, invented a
“I got the idea when I saw my grandmother harvesting lotus roots,” Yang
said. His grandmother needed to work very hard under the hot sun and sometimes
would badly hurt her fingers when using her harvesting tools.
To make things easier for his grandmother, Yang thought of creating a
machine that could automatically (自动地) harvest lotus roots. With the help of his teacher, Yang
spent nearly a year building the model of the robot.
The robot moves on its own through the muddy field. It uses image recognition
to find roots by looking at the color of the lotus leaves. The machine’s arm then cuts the mature
(成熟的) lotus roots.
When Yang showed the machine to his grandmother, she was happy and gave some useful
suggestions for improvement. She suggested using the audio player to show the robot’s location in
dense (稠密的) lotus leaves. “My grandmother’s suggestion reminded me that any invention must
have true value,” said Yang.
Although Yang thought he still needed to make improvements, like finding cheaper ways to
make the machines, his spirit was praised by many people. His teacher once spoke highly of Yang,
“He is a boy who always thinks creatively. Whenever he comes across problems in life, he always
works hard to solve them.”
1.Where is Yang Jun’ao from
2.How long did Yang spend building the model of the robot
3.How does the machine use image recognition to find lotus roots
4.Were the suggestions from Yang’s grandma helpful
5.What do you think made him invent the robot successfully

What do you think the future will be like Will people have robots in their homes Will
people live in the sea Won’t kids go to school and will they just study at home on computers A
lot of people want to go to the future to see the future life. But what about the past Do you want
to go back to the old days Is it possible for us to go back in time someday Maybe!
Life is full of many beautiful times, but you may easily forget some of them. Now a man
has a way to remember them. Lucas Rizzotto from the US invented(发明 ) a personal time
machine. The machine can let him live his past again.
To invent the time machine, Rizzotto used a pair of glasses with a camera(摄影机) inside.
He wore them for one year and the glasses took many 3D videos of his everyday life during the
year. Those videos were about tasting food, climbing trees, dancing, traveling and so on.
15
“I think the machine is cool. It’s hard to describe the feeling of living my own past again. It
doesn’t feel like watching a video, ” Rizzotto said. “Although this time machine can’t really travel
through time, it makes me look at myself in a new way.”
1. Why do many people want to go to the future according to the passage
2. What can the personal time machine do for Lucas Rizzotto
3. Which one was inside the glasses, a computer or a camera

Our feelings influence almost every decision we make.Instead of living a boring life, positive
feelings can help us a lot.The pity is that sometimes we become victims(受害者)of feelings.
In one of my latest books, I compare people’s ability to controls(控制键 )on a media
player.Just like the controls can help you enjoy wonderful songs, these methods will be choices for
you to manage feelings successfully.
1.Pause
Take time to stop and think twice before you speak or act.Of course, you may feel sorry if
you like doing something without thinking twice—like sending an angry email or posting
something bad on social media. If your feelings are getting out of control, pause. If possible,go for
a short walk.Once you’ve calmed down, decide how you want to move forward.
2.Volume control
Have you ever noticed that when speaking with someone, your style or tone is a mirror of the
other person’s?If you stay calm or quiet, they’ll follow you.Shout or scream, and they’ll do just
like you.If a discussion starts to become worse, try to change it by softening your tone or lowering
your voice.
3.Record
If you want to learn more about another person’s thoughts, recording,a way of careful
listening,may help.You don’t need to reply at once;instead, you’re listening to understand.
Through careful listening,it can help you discover misunderstandings you don’t know.Don’t judge
or offer advice before you know more about others and the topic.
1. What does the writer compare people’s ability to?
2. How many ways are there to manage feelings?
3. How may you feel if you like doing something without thinking twice?
4. What should you do if a discussion starts to become worse?
5. Why is careful listening important?

Different people have different interests in their free time. My friend Li Ming and I often go
to the movies when we are free. However, we like different movies.
My favorite movie star is Wu Jing. He is a great actor. He looks handsome. He had a film
called the Battle at Lake Changjin《长津湖》recently. It’s a wonderful war film. And it is very
popular these days. I think it’s moving.
But Li Ming likes Shen Teng best. He thinks his movies are funny. He will laugh loudly when
he watches them. One of Shen Teng’s movies is Crazy Alien (《疯狂的外星人》). But I don’t think
it’s great. In fact, it’s boring. What’ s more, Li Ming also likes watching Beijing Opera. He even

My grandma is a gentle old lady. Like many women of her time, she has a talent for sewing
She made all my childhood clothes on her own. As a young girl, rather than playing
outside with my friends, I liked staying with my grandmother to help her sew. I was so interested
in getting the thread(线)through the eyes of the needle(针).
Later, instead of making clothes, my grandmother would sew gloves or insoles(鞋垫)for me.
She cannot be with me all the time, but the love passed by her needle and thread warms me.
It was my grandma who sparked my enthusiasm(热情)for sewing and taught me how to
show love and care. Almost a year ago, I was trying to give a birthday present to my friend. Then,
I thought, “ Why don’t I sew her a gift ” I decided to make her a pencil case. I cut out the pattern
(图案)from my old skirt, drew a design and started sewing. It took me many days to finish it.
The final result wasn’t as pretty as I imagined. But it was the best pencil case that I could make.
Just yesterday, my friend called me and said that every time she sees the pencil case, she
thinks of me and the warm feeling.
Sewing is a fantastic art form that can convey(传达)our love and care.

“Little Me” is a moving movie that tells the story of Liu Chunhe, a young man with cerebral
palsy (脑瘫) played by Yi Yang Qianxi. The movie came out in China on December 27, 2024. The
film shows how Liu Chunhe faces many problems in life but never gives up on his dreams.
One of the most touching parts of the movie is how Liu Chunhe tries to live a regular life

first surprised by his strange look and his disability, but this doesn’t let him give up. With a
determined (坚定的 ) look in his eyes, he starts to introduce himself and his skills. His voice is
strong and full of hope. This scene clearly shows his strong spirit and his strong wish to change
his life. He finally succeeds in getting this job.
Another important theme in the movie is the power of family love. Liu Chunhe’s
grandmother always encourages him and treats him like anyone else. Her support helps him
believe in himself and find his purpose in life.
All in all, “Little Me” is not just a movie about a boy with cerebral palsy. It is a story about

In the coming holiday, I’ll do much for this dream: exercise daily (15-minute morning
runs, weekend ping-pong with my brother) to stay healthy; read one storybook monthly to get
smarter; learn 10 English words daily to improve my grades; and talk more with classmates to
shake off shyness.
Later, I’ll work in a small school, being kind to every student. With hard work, my
dream will come true, and my future life will be happier than now.

meaningful job.
For the new year, I have clear plans. To stay healthy, I’ll run 20 minutes daily and play

Academically, I’ll spend an hour on math daily to boost my grades. Also, I’ll talk more with
classmates to be less shy and build better friendships.
