Elara stared at the 800-meter race sign-up sheet in the school hallway, her fingers hoveringover the paper like nervous butterflies.Just last month, she'd struggled to finish a 400-meter PEtest, far behind her classmates -her lungs burning like fire, her legs heavy as lead -until she'dfinally crossed the finish line, cheeks hot with shame. "I'm not a runner," she thought to herself,already stepping back to turn away, her shoes scraping softly against the floor.
But then she saw Coach Miller walking over, holding a stopwatch that shone in the hallway light, his smile warm and steady as a rock. "I saw you out there after class last week-running around the track even when everyone else had gone home," he said. "That's determination rightthere. Why not give it a try It's not about being fast; it's about challenging yourself." His words made her pause, a tiny spark of hope lighting up in her chest. For the first time, she thought: Maybe I can stop saying "I can't." She picked up a pen, its plastic body cool in her palm, and wrote hername down, the ink bleeding softly into the paper.
At the starting line of the 800 meter race a week later, Elara's hands were still shaking. A finelayer of sweat was starting to form on her forehead, and the distant cheers drifted over, mixing withthe soft whisper of wind through the oak trees. She'd almost quit training last week. Her legs hadached so badly that they felt ready to give out, and tears had streamed down her cheeks as sheleaned against the track fence, catching her breath. She'd never run such a long distance before, not even for fun. But Coach Miller's words kept echoing in her mind: "It's not about winning, but giving your best.
