Treasure Our Library Books: A Shared Responsibility
Last week, while borrowing books and reading in the school library, I noticed an unpleasant phenomenon. Some books are badly marked with underlines, notes, and even drawings. What’s worse, some pages are torn or folded, which seriously affects other students’ reading experience and shortens the life of these valuable books.
Books are not only tools for learning but also symbols of knowledge and culture. These volumes belong to everyone, not to any single reader. Therefore, we should treat them with care and respect. I sincerely urge all students to stop scribbling(胡写,乱画) on the pages and develop the habit of civilized reading. Let us work together to protect our shared resources and create a better learning environment for all.

Just as I was about to turn and run, two police officers arrived on the scene. To my great relief, they quickly took control. One officer approached the cow calmly, speaking in a soothing voice, while the other kept onlookers at a safe distance. The cow, still scared, slowly stopped its threatening sounds. My knees were still shaking, but the officer handed me a rope and motioned for me(示意我) to slip it over the cow’s neck.(把它套在牛脖子上) I managed, though my hands trembled so badly I almost let the rope slip. With their professional help, I managed to guide the animal away from the street.
After we managed to secure the cow to a tree, we began to discuss what to do with it. The shop-owner remembered a farm two kilometers away, and I noticed a bright yellow tag in the cow’s ear. The officers called the number printed on it. Sure enough, twenty minutes later, a mud-splattered pick-up rattled up(溅满泥巴的小卡车嘎吱嘎吱地开了起来), and a grateful farmer recognized his lost cow. Though I wasn’t that much of a hero as I’d imagined, I felt a sense of quiet satisfaction. Lila, on the other hand, was fully impressed when I told her the story that evening. “You are a true hero, Daddy!” she exclaimed. And for that, I feel proud.

M: I always shop at Brown’s.
W: A new supermarket has opened in this area. It’s much bigger.
M: I know, but it’s always packed with people. (3)

M: Right now For what

Text 6【新年健康计划】
W: Happy New Year, Mike. (6)
M: Happy New Year.
W: Have you made any resolutions (6)
M: I’d like to eat less and exercise more this year. (6) Three hamburgers a day is probably not a good idea.
W: Yeah. Many people hope to be healthier in the new year. You always see a lot of people start joining gyms. I heard some kind of statistic that gyms are always 50% more crowded in the month of January. And then usually by February, it’s back to normal. (7)

M: For over a year now. (12) It’s not that I’m addicted to it or have important calls, but I need the alarm to wake me up every morning. (12)
W: Yeah, but that’s where the risk is. According to experts, we should switch our phones off and on once a day as a security measure. It helps close the applications running in the background and stop data collection processes we’re not aware of.
M: Sounds reasonable. Do we switch the phone off and switch it back on immediately (13)

W: Yes, I believe you’ve all got your textbook. You have to finish reading assigned chapters before each class. Apart from that, there’s a list of books that you’re required to read. Now let’s have a close look at it. (16)
Text 10 (第17题为推断题)【人物介绍:卡斯帕·梅利维尔】
W: Hello everybody. Thanks for your consistent support for our weekly meeting, New Books Sharing. Today, we’ve invited Dr. Caspar Melville, (18) (19) (20) lecturer from the University of London. Dr. Melville started out as a music journalist for a black music magazine called Blues & Soul. In 1992, he moved to San Francisco and founded a jazz magazine named On the One with some friends. (18) They did a really good job, though there was not a lot of money in it. In 1997, he moved back to London and started teaching, (19) and made the decision to find another way to write about music. He grew up in London. He feels that the music in London clubs has formed him, but unfortunately, it has been seriously undervalued by the academic world. In black music studies, jazz has received great attention, but dance music has been largely ignored. His book, It’s a London Thing, is meant to change that situation. (20) So, let’s welcome Dr. Melville to share with us his ideas in the book.
