Expertly flipping a chicken steak in his hot wok, 48-year-old street vendor Li Junyong—nicknamed “Chicken Steak Brother”—has become a local celebrity and a signature attraction in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province.
His humorous talk with customers, such as, “You can refuse me, but not my chicken steak,” and, “You deserve everything beautiful in the world, including my chicken steak,” helped turn the city into a trending travel destination during the recent Mid-Autumn and National Day holiday. Li and his street stall’s popularity have given a noticeable boost to tourism in Jingdezhen, a city long famous for its ceramics.
According to Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, bookings related to Jingdezhen surged by nearly 70% on the platform during the first three days of the eight-day holiday, which ran from October 1. Group purchases for glass-blowing and pottery-making experiences in the city also saw significant growth, rising 74% and 71% year-on-year, respectively, over the same period. Travel platform Qunar also highlighted the “Chicken Steak Brother” effect: on October 1, hotel occupancy rates in Jingdezhen increased by 30% compared to the same day last year.
Australian artist David Reid recently visited Li’s stall and shared his impression in a video: “This is 5 stars… When you love something, you want to make it the best you can. As artists, we strive for that all the time.”
This is not the first time a lesser-known city has gained sudden popularity during a public holiday. Earlier, Zibo in Shandong Province went viral among travelers for its barbecue scene, reflecting a growing interest among Chinese tourists in exploring niche destinations to avoid overcrowded hotspots.
A Qunar report confirmed that smaller cities—especially those with distinctive cuisine, natural scenery, or cultural appeal—were particularly popular during the National Day holiday. Over the eight-day break, the platform’s users booked hotels in more than 2,000 county-level destinations across China, with top picks including Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan, Yangshuo in Guangxi, and Pingtan in Fujian.
“China’s domestic tourism market is diversifying, with both major cities like Beijing and Xi’an and smaller cities or counties thriving during holidays,” said Wei Changren, founder of the tourism finance news website .
Wei noted that the online buzz around Jingdezhen and “Chicken Steak Brother” will likely give the local tourism market a strong push. However, he emphasized that local authorities should seize the opportunity to enhance tourism offerings and services, turning short-term attention into sustainable long-term growth.
