A Moral Dilemma in the Pool
Have you ever faced a difficult choice
Think about a time you had a strong competitor. How did you feel
If you saw your main competitor in trouble, would you help them Why or why not
What is more important: winning fairly or just winning
Ellen was the first girl on the ready bench (长凳) after she heard the announcement: "This is the first call for the eleven-and-twelve-year-old girls' 100-meter freestyle (自由泳)." Soon she was joined by other girls her age. She sat on the bench, nervously playing with her entry card.
"I hope I win," she thought. "Then I will have enough points in the meet to win 'Best Girl Swimmer' in my age group."
She looked around for Amy Nelson, the only girl in the group who would be real competition for her. But Amy was not on the ready bench. Ellen remembered seeing her in the locker room thirty minutes ago, so she was sure that Amy was in the crowd somewhere.
"Do you know where Amy Nelson is " Ellen asked Nancy, a girl sitting beside her. "If she doesn't get here soon, she will miss the event."
"The last time I saw her, she was over there," Nancy said as she pointed to a spot on the side of the bleachers (看台). This was a favorite resting place for the swimmers as they waited their turn to swim. Ellen's eyes slowly searched the group of girls, hoping to find Amy. Finally, she saw her talking to a friend.
"This is the second call for the eleven-and-twelve-year-old girls' 100-meter freestyle."
Ellen watched Amy. She hadn't heard the announcement. Her conversation continued.
"There's still time for me to get Amy," Ellen thought. "If I run, I can be back before the last call for the event." She knew that without Amy's competition, she would surely win the event. "After all," she reasoned, "Amy isn't my responsibility. If she can't pay attention to what she is supposed to be doing, she doesn't deserve to win — or even be in the race."
Ellen never missed any training exercise and always stayed focused. Lately, she had been practicing extra hard so she could better her times and qualify for the state meet next month. Ellen had a nervous feeling in her stomach. Her mouth was dry.
To get enough points to win 'Best Girl Swimmer'.
The only girl who is real competition for Ellen.
She sees Amy is going to miss the race. She must decide whether to tell her or not.

(她保持着流线型姿势,身体伸展得又长又平以减少阻力。)
But she knew this was more than ordinary anxiety. This was her conscience screaming that a victory without Amy would be hollow and meaningless. The thought of standing on the winner's podium knowing her rival had missed the race made her stomach churn. All those early morning practices, all that dedication - it deserved an honest test. In a decisive moment, Ellen sprang from the bench and pushed through the crowd. "Amy!" she called, her voice sharp with urgency. "Final call for our race! We have to go now!" Amy's face shifted from confusion to panic, then to profound gratitude. "Thank you!" she breathed. Without another word, the two rivals turned and sprinted toward the starting blocks, arriving just as the official waved them to their positions.
“Swimmers, take your mark, set,” BANG! The girls hit the water. Ellen exploded off the blocks, her body slicing cleanly into the cool water. All her earlier anxiety had transformed into pure, exhilarating focus. Her arms began windmilling in a powerful rhythm, each stroke pulling her steadily forward. Beside her, she could see Amy's form matching her pace, stroke for stroke. The water churned around them as they drove toward the opposite wall. There were no more thoughts of trophies or titles - only the burning in her muscles and the thunder of water in her ears. This was the race she had truly wanted: honest, challenging, and earned. With every breath, Ellen knew she was exactly where she was meant to be.
