Finding a balance
my tai chi experience
Extended reading
When my friend first suggested that we join the new Tai Chi Club at school, I hesitated(犹豫).I always believed(认为) tai chi was for old people. After the first class, however, I had to admit(承认) that I had been wrong about(误解) tai chi.It was amazing! One year later, I can honestly say(老实说) it has had a huge effect on me physically and mentally.Just as importantly(同样重要的是),practising tai chi has inspired(激励) me to explore(探索) the Chinese culture behind it.
The first few tai chi classes were fun and easy, and the moves(动作) really caught my imagination(想象力),with descriptive(描述性的)names like“white crane spreading its wings(白鹤亮翅) and“golden rooster standing on one leg”(金鸡独立).When I asked my coach(教练) where these interesting names came from,he told me about the history of tai chi.Zhang Sanfeng,a 13th-century Taoist(道家),was said to have invented(发明) tai chi after drawing inspiration(灵感) from a fight between a snake and a bird. However, nowadays people tend to believe that Chen Wangting,a 17th-century master(大师) of Chinese martial arts(武术),developed tai chi based on martial arts skills.
No wonder(难怪) some tai chi moves are named after(被命名) animals—Chinese martial arts have a long-standing practice of imitating(模仿)animals. Chen Wangting's original set of moves(原始的一系列动作) is called Chen-style tai chi, but other styles of tai chi have since been developed, including Yang-style, Wu-style and Sun-style.
After learning the basics(基础动作) of tai chi in those first few classes,I found myself bored and aching(无聊且疼) from doing the same moves over and over again(反反复复).Luckily,my coach taught me how to relax my muscles and focus on peace of mind while performing the routine(常规;一套动作).With these requirements of tai chi in mind,I found to my satisfaction(令我满意的是)that my balance and flexibility(平衡与灵活性) slowly(渐渐地gradually) improved, that I was able to do more difficult moves, and that my love for tai chi returned stronger than ever(比以往任何时候都更(搭配比较级)).
In time, I began to look into the ancient(古老的) Chinese culture behind tai chi. I discovered that tai chi is deeply rooted in(深深根治在)the Chinese philosophy(哲学)of yin and yang, which are believed to form the unity of opposites(对立的统一).Neither can exist independent of(独立于) the other; for example, there is no shadow without light. The practice of tai chi aims to(目的是,旨在) maintain (维持)the balance of yin and yang in the body through opposite movements(相对的运动):forwards and backwards,up and down, left and right, breathing in and breathing out. Eventually(最终),tai chi brings about(带来) a state(状态) of physical balance and mental peace.
A year of practising tai chi has had a positive effect on(有积极影响) my everyday life. I sleep better at night, and I am more energetic during the day.I feel happier and more confident.Tai chi has taught me to relax my mind, enabling me to stay cool in stressful situations. I am sure I will continue to practise tai chi and enjoy the benefits it has brought me.
