Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That's an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. _____▲_____This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world's forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia's forest loss doubled in 2024.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2024. That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.

Victor Hugo once said, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” Up to now, nobody has been able to create laughter like Charlie Chaplin (1889—1977). He brightened the lives of millions through two world wars and the hard years in between.
Chaplin's own life was not easy. He was born to a poor family. Chaplin learned to sing and dance as soon as he could speak and walk. Every member of the family performed to help make money. By his teens, Chaplin had become one of the most popular child actors in England through his humor.
Later, Chaplin began making silent films, where the story was told only through body language and movements. Usually, Chaplin appeared in these films as the Little Tramp, a poor man with a moustache (胡须), large trousers, worn-out shoes, and a round hat. He walked around stiffly (僵硬地) with a walking stick. Even though the Little Tramp was considered a failure in life, he always tried to turn his sadness into joy like Chaplin.
Chaplin once said, “My pain may be the reason for somebody's laugh. But my laugh must never be the reason for somebody's pain.” He is loved and remembered as a great actor who encouraged people during dark times.

主题:遇到野熊如何自保 词数:271 难度:★★★★ 建议用时:10 mins
Thousands of nature lovers see bears each year. Most of them walk away with good luck. But for the unlucky few, it can lead to serious injury or death. If you come upon a bear in its natural setting, you probably feel afraid. But staying safe depends on acting carefully and calmly.
There are many theories about what a person should do when facing a giant bear. Some people would suggest running away, but bears can run much faster than humans can. Others say a person should drop to the ground and play dead. That turns out to be good advice in some situations but not in others. It's best to learn how bears behave before you head into the wild.
If a bear is coming towards you, _____▲_____. The reason why it attacks may be to protect (such as protecting the baby bears) or to hunt. When a bear attacks for protection, dropping to the ground is a useful way to show it that you're not a danger. However, it can't help you stay safe when bears want to hunt for food. During a bear attack, the first thing you should do is to drop any food you have and back away (躲避).
If the bear still comes towards you, make as much noise as possible by shouting and hitting objects hard. Researches show that these behaviors probably make the bear back down and leave. What's more, you can also use pepper spray(胡椒粉喷雾剂)during a bear attack. Always bring it with you in the wild, and have it ready for use any time.

Trees can keep a record of the earth's climate for a long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds, even thousands of years!
If you see a stump(树桩), you may find that the top of the stump has many rings. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree's life.
In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years. So, scientists can use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.
