Physical education, or PE, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for different reasons. But should high school students receive physical education The answer is certainly “Yes.”
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from being fat. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights.
Not doing sports increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel anxious that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
28. How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school
A. Proud. B. Excited. C. Nervous D. Curious.
29. What are freshmen probably worried about
A. The ability to make friends. B. The learning task.
C. The freshman orientation. D. The relationship with teachers.
30. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do
A. Develop friendships. B. Build up their strength.
C. Develop their interests. D. Improve their learning ability.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. What you’ll learn in senior high school.
B. What you learned in junior high school.
C. The importance of being more independent and responsible.
D. The difference between junior high school and senior one.
D
When I first moved into a traditional hutong in Beijing, the narrow alleyways felt like a maze (迷宫). My tiny room was part of a siheyuan shared with three Chinese families. Back home in London, I lived in a quiet suburban house with a private garden. Here, I could hear neighbors chatting through paper-thin walls, and the smell of stir-fried vegetables often drifted into my room. It was overwhelming yet strangely alive.
The biggest shock came the next morning. I stepped outside to find a communal tap where residents brushed teeth and washed vegetables side by side. An elderly man in pajamas nodded at me while spitting into the drain — a common practice here but shocking to Western eyes. Later when I tried to throw trash into a bin, Mrs. Li from next door rushed over, sorting my waste into four colorful categories with a patient smile. “Recycling matters,” she said, though I understood little Chinese.
Gradually, the hutong revealed its magic. Children played hopscotch (跳房子游戏) on stone paths, and shopkeepers knew everyone’s name. One rainy day, my roof leaked. Before I could call for help, one of my neighbors climbed up with a ladder and fixed it himself. That evening, he invited me for jiaozi. As we dipped them in vinegar, I realized privacy in the West meant isolation; here, “noisy closeness” meant belonging.
Now, when I bike past the morning crowds buying baozi or see neighbors playing chess under tree shades, I feel at home. The hutong taught me that culture shock is just the first step to discovering a new way of living one where community wraps around you like a warm quilt.
32. What surprised the author most on the first morning
A. The complex layout of the hutong. B. The queuing up habit of neighbors.
C. The smell of cooking in the air. D. The shared use of a water tap.
33. Why did Mrs. Li help the author with the trash
A. To help him adapt to local customs. B. To market colorful trash bins.
C. To promote garbage classification. D. To keep the public area clean.
34. What does “noisy closeness” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A Terrible living environment. B. Active community interactions.
C. Respect for foreign culture. D. Loud arguments between neighbors.
35. What does the writer think of the present life in Beijing
A. Satisfying. B. Overwhelming. C. Disappointing. D. Challenging.
