In order to solve it, he made “heated earmuffs”!
Bette Nesmith Graham was a typist (打字员), but she was not very good at typing. She often made mistakes in her work. To 3 her mistakes, she invented “Liquid Paper (修正液)”. It dried quickly and made her able to write on top of it 4 this time.
To invent something isn’t necessarily difficult. The important thing is that it works and is 5 . Little Katie Harding, 5 years old, didn’t like walking to the school bus on 6 and rainy winter mornings. She kept walking into muddy puddles (泥坑) because she couldn’t see them, and did her brother, who always walked with her and held the 7 over them. Katie’s simple but wonderful 8 was to fasten (使固定) a flashlight to the umbrella. The “muddy puddle spotter” was born.
Next time something doesn’t work in the way you want it to, do something about it! Things have been invented can always be improved. New ideas can always be found. If you 9 , that’s OK. Then you know what doesn’t work! Somewhere out there, there is a new thing just 10 to be invented by you.

Passage 1
They say our family dinners and holiday memories are some of the things they 1 the most. We always allowed them to bring a friend or two to 2 us. I made it a rule that there wouldn’t be telephones, televisions or computers in their bedrooms. I didn’t want to live with antisocial (不合群的) 3 that only came out of their rooms to eat and take a bath. I really wanted them to be a 4 of the family! All my kids say it was a (n) 5 decision. And so far the same 6 go for the grandchildren too.
I couldn’t promise to live forever but I could teach them to live 7 me. That meant they had to learn how to cook a few simple meals, do some washing, and clean up after themselves. Their father had a few rules too. For example, they had to know how to use a fire extinguisher (灭火器), and master some 8 repairing skills. Even the girls went to college with a toolbox.
There were some other pretty strange rules that actually helped them and their friends. They could call me any time 9 they or their friends found themselves in a difficult or dangerous situation. Passage 2
I will never forget the lesson that I learned when I was in my primary school.
One day, my art teacher, Mr. Brown came into the classroom. Without saying anything, he drew a line on the blackboard. Looking at the confused students, he asked, “Who can make the line 1 ”
Before he finished what he wanted to say, all of us laughed and cried, “That’s too easy.”
“But there are some 2 . You can’t remove the existing (已有的) line. You can’t erase (擦除) any part of it. 3 you can’t even touch it.” Mr. Brown added.
We had never thought that the line needed to be shortened without doing anything to it! All at once, the whole class fell into 4 . We were just looking at each other, but 5 of us came up with any idea. All our mind seemed to go blank. When I looked at Tom, the smartest student in the class, I noticed him quietly lower his head.
After a while, complaints could be heard everywhere.
“It’s impossible. It can’t be done.”
“How can we do that without touching the line ”
Mr. Brown didn’t say anything. Slowly he 6 a piece of chalk, and carefully drew on the board another line that was longer than the first one. Then he 7 , “We can’t make the line shorter, but we can draw a longer line to make it look shorter.”
For some time there was dead silence. Then smiles of understanding appeared on every young face. Finally we shouted and applauded (鼓掌) 8 as we realized we had learned a useful lesson.
For many people, when they are faced up with competition, the first idea that will come into their mind easily is to cut others’ line short.
