It’s important to teach your children good manners.1 Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners There is a good book, How to Behave and Why by Munro Leaf. I read it with
my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult and there are pictures in it.2 They make the book easy to comprehend.
In daily lives, before children are going to school or a friend’s house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners. And you can have a manners match. It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They should be quiet in class and listen to their teachers. And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates, and “thank you” when they get help from others. Good table manners are important too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners will help your children a lot in their daily lives.4 So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

①What did people do to communicate in ancient times Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
②Alphorns (阿尔卑斯号角) were to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland once. They are very long and they are very heavy too. So, alphorns are hard to blow. Then why use them Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen (牧人) used them to
call cows in the distance for milking. Alphorns were also to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they’re musical instruments.5
③The people of La Gomera, an island, have their own special way of sending messages from one mountain to another. They use a whistled (口哨的) language called El Silbo Gomero which comes from their language Spanish. People can hear whistling in up to 5 kilometres, which means they can use it
across much greater distances than shouting.6 El Silbo Gomero can send all kinds of messages, including greetings and notices. People use El Silbo Gomero less than it used to be, but students in La Gomera have to learn it.
④Did you know it’s also possible to send
messages without making a noise This is called
visual communication, and it includes the use
of flags and even smoke. Long ago,
soldiers (士兵) along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a sign.7 If they noticed something uncommon from their signal (信号) towers, they set a fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they set fires too. In this way, messages could travel 300 miles in just a few hours.

二、阅读理解(每小题2分,共8分)
China accepts Western fashion and future technology as they develop fast now. But a growing number of young people are looking to the past for their choices of clothes and wearing hanfu, or “Han clothes”.1
These costumes (装束) of hanfu are enjoying a renaissance in part because of the guide of the government. Period dramas (历史剧) also help to add the interest in traditional Chinese
clothes.2 For example, a TV drama in the Song Dynasty won much attention when it came out.
Each dynasty had its own hanfu. Except some differences, hanfu is baggy (宽松的), soft long clothing. It covers the body, and its sleeves (袖子) reach the knees.3
In modern China, the hanfu community is large in size: from history lovers to movie directors, from students to even young professors. Some new couples even get married wearing hanfu.
“Clothes are an important part of culture,” said Jiang Xue who is a member of a Beijing hanfu club.4 “If we do not even understand our traditional clothing or don’t wear them, how can we talk about other parts of our culture ”
There is a long way to go before all the people accept the design in China.
Others say the strange looks they get when wearing hanfu in public places stopped them from wearing hanfu. “I used to be very embarrassed to wear hanfu out,” a worker said.4 A high school student is more positive. He said, “At the very least, we can wear our own traditional clothes.”4

Giving gifts is a kind of knowledge, and it is also one kind of strategy (策略). In the Western countries, you should be careful of giving gifts. Never give a gift in a job interview.1 People usually give gifts during special holidays, or as a “thank you” for special invitations. While arriving at a special party, you should bring a gift. Here are a few rules:
Be modest (谦逊的) about your gift. Do not buy gifts that are too expensive, such as a Swiss watch. A special food from your country, a bottle of wine, candies or flowers are the best if you do not know the host very well,3 but be sure that your gift will not win much attention. You can usually say something like “I hope you will like it.” when you offer your gift.
Be careful of giving wine. A bottle of wine is usually all right if you know your host drinks wine, but you should only give hard alcohol (烈酒) such as whisky as a gift when you know the host well and are sure that they would like such a gift.
Flowers are good, but remember: Roses are for special love. You have to be careful.
A small cultural gift from your country is usually very good. Make sure that you pack your gift well.2 A nice card with it will be better.

Whether you’re riding in a “lift” or an “elevator”, or eating “chips” or “fries”, it all depends on whether you’re in the UK or the US. Although they both speak English, there are many expressions that differ (相异) between the cultures.4
For example, sometimes you are just not want to go out with friends. In the US you might say you don’t want to do that
activity,1 but in the UK you would say, “I can’t be asked.”
Maybe you feel a little anxious (焦虑). In the US, you might say you are nervous, but in the UK, you could say you are “having kittens”. If people in the UK are under pressure, they might say they are “under the cosh”.
Many English speakers are often confused about the meanings of these expressions. Stephanie Stone, an
American, thinks about her experience studying in the UK, “People would ask, ‘You all right ’ For months I thought I looked bad until I realized it just meant ‘How’s it going ’”2
If you want to know more about US and UK expressions, you’d better have a butcher’s hook at some books.3 It can be quite interesting to find the same expression in your own language.

三、阅读理解(每小题2分,共8分)
If you watch a TV show without
sound, can you guess what was going
on This skill of “reading” people
without using words is non-verbal communication (非言语交际). It includes facial expressions, body language and more.
Facial expressions are a common way of communication. In other words, people are able to know your feelings quite well by your face.
However, is it the same for body language Take gestures (手势) as an example. While some gestures are the same in all cultures, others are different. Chinese usually hold up our index finger (食指) and middle finger to count two. But Europeans will raise their thumb (拇指) and index finger.2 This is because most European schools teach students to count from the thumb. In Chinese schools, students start with the index finger. On the other hand, the same gestures may have
different meanings in different cultures. For example, the “OK” gesture means “good” in most cultures. If you show this sign to a man from Germany, however, he will think you are laughing at him. You may be in trouble.1
Another important part of body language is touch. In some cultures, people pat (轻拍) their friends on the back to praise them, but in other cultures, this isn’t polite. Besides, in China, shaking hands is a common way to greet. In India,
however, you shouldn’t shake hands with an old man. Instead, the best way to greet him is to touch his feet.3
All in all, our body language depends a lot on our culture. So, next time you decide to travel to another country, a quick search online can guide you on how to behave properly.4
( )1.In which country could the “OK” gesture get you into trouble
A.Germany. B.Australia.
C. Japan. D.Canada.
A
( )2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text
A.It’s difficult to communicate with facial expressions.
B.French people use thumbs and index fingers to show two.
C.It is polite to pat friends on the back around the world.
D.Americans count from the index finger.
( )3.What is the best way to greet an old man in India
A.Kissing his face. B.Shaking his hands.
C.Giving him a bow. D.Touching his feet.
B
D
( )4.How do you use your body language properly in a foreign language
A.By doing a search online.
B.By watching a TV show.
C.By learning new body language.
D.By learning our own culture.
A
四、任务型阅读(每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面材料,从方框中所给的A—E五个选项中选出正确选项(其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入第1~4小题,并回答第5小题。
Every culture has rules about how people should act, like how to greet people and how to have dinner. However, the rules in different cultures are not often the same.
Greeting people is always polite. But it’s more important in
some cultures than in others. In France, when you come into
a store, you should always greet the people working there.
1.__________ The same goes for coffee shops and restaurants. If
you don’t do that, people will think you are not polite at all.
Other cultures also pay attention to greetings. But they
may be more careful with the words they say. 2.____________ If
you’re speaking to a friend, you can just say “good morning”
D
E
in Japanese. However, if you are on your way to the office, you should be more polite.
Some of the biggest cultural differences have to do with table manners. 3.____________ That means eating without making any noise. But in parts of Asia, making a sound while eating shows that you are enjoying your meal.
4.____________ For example, in America, people use forks to bring food to their mouths. But in Thailand, people only use a fork to push food onto a spoon.
A
B
Yet there are also similar points across cultures. Saying “please” and “thank you”, for example, is always polite. If you are kind to others, people will always be kind to you. Showing kindness can bring people together, no matter what culture they come from.
A.In America, it’s polite to eat as quietly as possible.
B.There are also differences in how people eat across cultures.
C.People often shake hands when they meet for the first time.
D.And you should always say “goodbye” to them when you leave.
