五、阅读理解(每小题2分,共16分)
A
One day, when I finished raising money for a charity and was on the train back home, I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who helped me.
When I got off the train, I felt really good. The next day, I wrote more thank-you notes1 and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had an idea: Why not keep on doing this every day of the year
To keep on this task, I decided to pick out a different theme (主题) each month. January was charity. February would be neighbour. And many names came to my mind right away.
While writing the notes, I realized I
spent too much time on the phone moving
from app to app, enjoying other people’s
lives. Writing thank-you notes gave me the
time to do something different, paying
more attention to my own life.2
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors and teachers. In July, my “food” month came, so I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favourite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
I find myself missing you recently. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful food. Jake and I will never forget the cake you made for us. We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching (感人的) letter before.3 I’m going through a hard time right now, and this encourages me a lot.3”
On 31st December, I wrote my last card to my husband Jake and our two kids.4 And I took a picture of us, so that I could remember the feeling coming up inside me. Gratitude (感谢).

Now in hospital, we can see not only doctors,
nurses and patients, but also hospital helpers.
Hospital helpers are new to many people. They
can help people do a lot of things. For example,
they can get appointments with a doctor and see the doctor with patients.1
In these years, there are more and more hospital helpers in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The number of old people is growing fast in these cities. Many of them don’t know how to get appointments with doctors online. And they often get lost in big hospitals when they go there. Also, their children may live far from them and can’t go to the hospital with them. So these old people have the need for hospital helpers. In fact, many young people also use helper services. And they’re usually more open and trusting (轻易信赖别人的).2
With the help of hospital helpers, patients can spend less time finishing medical examinations (检查). And thanks to hospital helpers, patients feel warm and relaxed.
However, experts say hospital helpers still need to improve their services, so people can trust them much more. Hospital helpers should be friendlier and more careful. They also need to have basic medical knowledge.3

Lamiyah Jabbar first picked up Diane early
one morning so she could go to work at a coffee
bar (小馆子).3 As they were talking during the
car ride, Diane mentioned that she was looking
forward to Christmas. She was hoping to receive a new pair of shoes and a dress.
While these might not seem like expensive shopping, Diane said that she did not have much money for herself. She used most of her money to help take care of her grandchildren. After Jabbar dropped Diane off at work, she stopped picking up some more passengers,2 so she could do some shopping.3
Jabbar then returned to the coffee bar where Diane worked, so she could surprise Diane with a new dress and a $50 gift card for the shoes.1、3 At first, Diane didn’t know
her, but then Jabbar reminded her of their conversation earlier that morning and handed Diane the dress.
Diane hugged her with tears in her eyes and said, “Oh! Thank you so much! This has been such a terrible day, but you’ve just made this day so much better!”4
Jabbar later told a local news reporter that she offered to return to the coffee bar later that day so she could give Diane a ride home for free.3 “I’m one of those people who are like
others. You can’t tell me your problem because I can’t move on without helping,” she said.

According to UNESCO, a large
number of children in villages in some
African countries like Kenya and
Tanzania do not go to school. They
have to work to make money for their family. And about half of people in these countries live without electricity (电).
A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a special solar (太阳能的) power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called Solar Cow.1 The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their children to school by setting up (设立) Solar Cows at schools.2
Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries (给电池充电) called “Solar Milks”. The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.
People can only charge the batteries by using the Solar Cow, so children have to go to school to get the electricity.3a Every day, children put their batteries into the bottom of their school’s Solar Cow.3d They go to class while the Solar Cow is charging the batteries.3c At the end of the day, they take the batteries home.3b
Each Solar Milk battery can charge a mobile phone three or four times, or a radio once or twice. The battery is also a
flashlight (手电筒), and it can provide ten hours of light.4 “My father used to travel two to three hours to the charging shop to charge his phone, and it cost a lot,” a boy said. “But now, he can use the battery I bring from school to charge his phone at home.”
