The differences between simple past and past perfect tense
Explore how to use the past perfect tense
1、表示由过去的某一时刻开始，一直延续到过去另一时间的动作或状态。时间标志词：by the time, by+时间, before, after, until等
Usage of the past perfect tense
1.By the end of last term we __________(learn) 12 units.
到上学期末,我们已经学了12个单元。
had learnt
2.By the end of last term 12 units ______________(learn) by us.
到上学期末,我们已经学了12个单元。
had been learnt
2、由when, before, after, as soon as, till / until引导的状语从句中，
两个动作均发生在过去的不同时间，发生在前的，用过去完成时；发生在后的，用一般过去时。
Usage of the past perfect tense
1.When I woke up, it ____ already _______(stop) raining.
2.She didn't go to bed until she ____________(finish) her work.

注意：
如果两个动作紧接着发生，则常常不用过去完成时，特别是在包含before和after的复合句中，因为从句的动作和主句的动作发生的先后顺序已经非常明确，可以用一般过去时代替过去完成时。

1.We had hoped to catch the early train,but we could not get there in time.

4.用在虚拟语气中,表示与过去事实相反。

hardly...when...,no sooner...than...一……就
例1：Hardly had I sat downwhen the phone rang again.

例2: No sooner had the concert begun than it started to rain heavily.
音乐会刚开始，就下起了大雨。
仿写：我刚写完作业，朋友就打电话叫我出去。
Hardly had she opened the door when the dog rushed out.
No sooner had I finished my homework than my friend called me to go out.

It was the first (second, ...) time that sb had done sth...这是sb第几次做某事
例：It was the first time that we had seen snow together .
那是我俩第一次一起看见雪。。
