California’s Wildfires
January 8, 2025
Recently, the wildfires in California, USA have caught the world's eye. On January 7, 2025, a fire started near Palisades in western Los Angeles County. Driven by the strong Santa Ana winds (blowing over 100 kilometers per hour), the fire spread quickly eastward.
By January 13, 24 people died and 16 were missing. Over 12,300 buildings, including many homes, were burned. Universities closed, and many people became homeless.
The wildfires were caused by several factors. Years of drought made plants dry and easy to burn. Strong Santa Ana winds made the fire spread faster. Also, Old power lines that sparked(冒火花的老旧电线) also caused the problem.
The local government and firefighters, along with those from nearby areas and other countries, tried hard to put out the fires with helicopters and fire trucks. But strong winds and large burned areas made it very difficult.
These California wildfires are terrible and warn people worldwide. We all share the earth, so we need to get along with nature. We can save water and electricity, protect forests and grasslands, and work together to keep our earth beautiful.
