Passage 1
The city of Marquette in Michigan is closing a section of a road to vehicular(车辆的)traffic every night to protect migrating salamanders(蝾螈). From 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily until the migration is completed, a section of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park will be closed, the city declared.
"Protecting the salamanders is important, as they are an indicator species, informing us about the health of our environment," said Kathleen Henry, Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) special projects coordinator and education specialist. The salamanders spend the cold winter underground. Then every spring, they make their way to the water where they mate and lay eggs.
It was in 2018 that Eli Bieri, a former Northern Michigan University student, noticed vehicles were killing hundreds of these migrating salamanders. "We would see thousands of salamanders crossing the street in just one night," Bieri said. "It was really amazing — until we see cars pass by and kill salamanders. That really troubled me — it kept me awake at night." He sought the help of the SWP, who reached out to Marquette city officials. Last spring, they got the relevant section of road within the park temporarily(暂时地) closed to evening and overnight vehicular traffic.
In 2019, before the road was closed, they found 429 salamanders dead in the road. Last year, they found only 3. With a sharp decline in the death rate, city officials are doing the same this year. "The goal is to apply our science to wildlife management," Bieri said. "For me, to be able to see the science applied to successful management practices was very satisfying."

Passage 2
For many people in Dahuangba village in Xishuangbanna, wild Asian elephants were the worst neighbors.
With their farms located on the edge(边缘)of the rainforest where the elephants live, the locals could only watch hopelessly as the elephants ate their food. Some unlucky people have even found themselves locked in their cars as curious elephants shook them back and forth as if they were toys. While it's just fun and games for the elephants, experiences like these were very scary for the ordinary people. As such, the people of Dahuangba in Southwest China's Yunnan province used to hate wild Asian elephants.
However, attitudes are starting to change in these countryside areas because of the use of modern technologies like early-warning apps that track where these elephants are, and special teams of keepers who closely watch the movements of the elephant groups. A temporary sign sits at the side of the village's main road, ready to be used in the event of elephant sightings, reading: "Wild elephants seen ahead. Do not approach. Do not pass. Do not take photos. Do not try and drive them away."
It's also a problem that the village is close to the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve — a main living place of wild Asian elephants. "Almost all villagers have encountered the wild elephants one way or another in the past," Tao Daqiang, a local in Dahuangba, said. "I think the best way to achieve harmonious coexistence between the elephants and the villagers is to keep each other out of sight because no encounter(偶遇)with a wild elephant is pleasant."

Passage 3
Located about 200 kilometers south of Beijing, the Nandagang Migratory Bird Habitat in Cangzhou, Hebei province, is welcoming the autumn and winter migration season.
In recent years, the Nandagang Wetland and Bird Nature Reserve(自然保护区)has set up a platform for scientific research and monitoring, helping us know more about the bird species, numbers and distribution(分布). It also makes protection and rescue work better. “This system can recognize the birds by the pictures and sounds it catches.” said Meng Zhaolei, director of the planning bureau of the Nandagang wetland. "Researchers also take photos and collect data when they see birds," she said. Advanced technology makes it possible to do bird surveys without disturbing their normal activities.
Nandagang is an important place for birds to stop and pass through on the East Asia-Australasia Flyway. It's also a home for many valuable water birds. From late February to early April and from early October to mid-December, large numbers of migratory birds rest and feed here, with different groups of migratory birds take turns to stay there every five to 10 days.
In the past, due to worsened water quality, birds' habitat was destroyed significantly. Since 2020, through ecological restoration(修复)projects, the number and variety of bird species have been increasing annually, reaching 269 species, including 16 species of national first-class protected birds.
Meng mentioned that not long ago, the wetland restoration area welcomed hundreds of national second-level protected animals, the Tundra Swans, and saw a large number of geese and ducks settling in. Several Baer's Pochard(青头潜鸭)have been seen here, too, which is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List with a number of about only 500 globally. "It needs good water quality and is an important indicator of the environment," Meng said.

Task 3 Thinking and sharing
Read the following paragraph and think of the question:
If you were the official, what measures would you like to take to protect waterfowl
When the explorers first arrived in North America, there was a great variety of wildlife. Native Americans managed these natural resources well. But in just a few decades, the explorers and settlers that came later damaged a large part of these resources. Market hunters and some overly eager sportsmen killed millions of waterfowl(水禽). Also, to support the growing population, people dried millions of acres of wetlands. This greatly reduced the habitat(栖息地)for waterfowl.

Task 3 Thinking and sharing
Read the following paragraph and think of the question:
If you were the official, what measures would you like to take to protect waterfowl
A possible version:
Now that the creature faces great threat due to human’s activities, it is urgent for us to take effective measures to protect waterfowl. On one hand, we need to make laws and rules to ensure that they live and breed in a relatively safe environment. On the other hand, to punish illegal hunting is another effective way. Only by combining these measures can we achieve hamonious coexistence between human and waterfowl. Everyone should be involved in the battle for wildlife protection.
Look forward to our next class.
