Rule 1: -ing form can be used to modify a noun when the noun

Rule 1
V-ing can be used to modify a noun when the noun is the logic subject of the V-ing form.
动词的ing作定语和所修饰的名词在逻辑上有主谓关系.

If that’s a –ing phrase, we should put the attributive part after the modified noun.

1. 动名词（短语）作定语
表示被修饰词的属性、作用或用途，常置于被修饰词前。

a reading room =a room for reading 阅览室
a washing machine =a machine for washing洗衣机

2. 现在分词（短语）作定语
表示被修饰词的动作或状态，被修饰词与现在分词之间是主动关系，相当于一个定语从句。单个的现在分词作定语时，常放在被修饰词前；现在分词短语作定语时，则放在被修饰词后。
a sleeping baby = a baby who is sleeping 正在睡觉的婴儿
The boy standing by the window is my classmate.
= The boy who is standing by the window is my classmate.

3.如果动词-ing形式与被修饰词是被动关系,就用它的被动形式,即being done。通常表示“正在被做”, 常作后置定语。

The Bernina Express follows a route that runs from Eastern Switzerland to Northern Italy. People who travel aboard the Bernina Express have the chance to see incredible views.The landscape that lines the route is beautiful and dramatic, with snowy mountains and green valleys. There is no doubt that the Bernina Express is a journey for travellers who want to get back to nature: the train window becomes the TV screen, and the natural world is the show.
