Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”, was a great scientist who devoted his life to agriculture. Born in Beijing in 1930, he cared deeply about farmers’ poor harvests and food shortages, so he chose to study agriculture at Southwest Agricultural College in 1949 and graduated in 1953, starting his career as a researcher.
Yuan believed boosting crop yields was the key to solving food crises. Despite widespread doubt, he overcame huge technical difficulties and developed the first hybrid rice in 1974. This innovation greatly increased rice output—today, about 60% of China’s domestic rice consumption comes from his hybrid strains, feeding China and countries like India and Vietnam, helping to solve the problem of world hunger.
He received numerous awards at home and abroad for his invaluable contributions. Long ago, he envisioned super-sized rice plants, and later made “seawater rice” a reality, opening up vast salty land for cultivation. Uninterested in fame or wealth, he donated generously to agricultural research. Yuan passed away in 2021, leaving a legacy ([?leɡ?si]遗产) of feeding millions and inspiring generations with his lifelong dedication ([?ded??ke??n]奉献) and vision.
