The word opera comes from the Latin word opus, meaning “work”. It is a type of musical show that brings together music, singing, dance, acting, set design (布景设计), costumes, make-up, and even hairdressing. As such, it’s a team effort. Besides, opera also needs an audience to watch the show. Because of this, opera has always mirrored the society of its time.
Opera has been around for over 400 years and its origins can be traced back to Florence, Italy, in the late 16th century. Italy’s strong economy during the Renaissance (文艺复兴) provided a lot of money and support for artistic creation. It is said that the first opera in history was Dafne, created by Jacopo Peri and performed in 1597. Since then, opera has grown and changed with different music styles.
In the late 1700s, opera entered the Classical Period (古典时期). Composers turned their attention to praising the beauty in real life, and the music returned to the true emotional expression. The 1800s were the age of Romanticism (浪漫主义). During this period, opera showed themes like love, freedom, and justice. By the 1900s, opera, like other arts, entered the modern period. New ways of composing appeared, and opera reached a wider audience through radio and television.

Mrs. Wormwood laughed. “What a wonderful idea!”
Matilda, who was reading in the corner, looked up. “But that’s cheating, Daddy!” she said.
“Nonsense!” shouted her father. “It’s just good business! Now, where is my hat I need to look smart.”

Scene 4

“Don’t be silly,” his wife said. “Come here. I’ll take it off for you.”
“Ow-w-w! Don’t do that! Let go! You’ve nearly killed me!” he shouted.
“It must be the superglue. There’s only one thing to do.” cried Mrs. Wormwood. She got a pair of scissors to cut the hat off his head. But she wasn’t very careful, and she cut off a lot of his hair too. When she finally finished, Mr. Wormwood’s head was a funny sight, with bits of hat and hair sticking out everywhere.

China’s Tiangong Space Station welcomed a new thing — a special hot-air oven! Recently, astronauts from the Shenzhou-21 and Shenzhou-20 missions used this device successfully for the first time in space. This is an important step to improve Chinese astronauts’ dining experience in orbit. Now, they can enjoy tasty baked (烤的) food even hundreds of kilometers away from Earth.
Before this new invention, most space food was cooked beforehand and ready to eat. There were not many choices for taste and texture. The new oven has greatly made the space menu more varied (多种多样的). Astronauts have already tried baking popular dishes like “Orleans-style” chicken wings and black pepper beef steak. A video from the space station showed them putting the chicken wings into the oven carefully. After 28 minutes of exact heating, the delicious and soft chicken wings were done. The astronauts liked them very much.
However, baking in space brings special challenges. Liu Weibo, an expert in space life support technology, explained that the main difficulties are dealing with smoke and oil fumes (油烟). These could make the space station’s air dirty. The specially designed oven uses new technologies to clean smoke and collect oil. This makes sure the air in the cabin (船舱) stays clean. Besides, the oven is made to be strong and long-lasting. It can work well at least 500 times to meet the needs of long space missions.
The new oven is part of China’s ongoing work to make astronauts’ living conditions better in space. Now, the space station has more than 190 kinds of food. The menu is updated every 10 days to give different and healthy food choices. Apart from the oven, the “space garden” on the station is also growing well. Astronauts have successfully grown fresh vegetables like lettuce and cherry tomatoes. These add more fresh food to their meals.
“When astronauts stay in a small space for months, eating self-baked food not only makes their taste buds happy but also brings great mental (精神的) comfort,” Liu Weibo said. It turns out that a nice and delicious meal is always the best comfort — even in the huge space far from Earth.

Fashion trends (趋势) are around us, and they can be exciting. A trend used to happen in a 20-year cycle, but the Internet has developed so fast, so now a new trend seems to come every couple of months. But still, it follows the same stages:
●A trend first appears in a big fashion show. Reporters and other important people collect the information and predict a near-future trend.
●Then it’s talked about online and worn by famous people, making it better accepted and popular.
●Once the trend becomes popular, it will go to the public soon. Large clothing companies and shops begin following it and this is the highest point.
●After that, the trend usually falls and becomes out of date. However, this is not always the end, as most trends get popular again in broader cycles.
Trends can make you try something new and test your style. A survey shows some enjoy following trends because of excitement and fresh ideas. Others disagree, especially if a trend doesn’t match their self-feelings. Trends can be fun, but sometimes make people waste money as many simply see trends as brands. Last Sunday was a truly special day for me. My classmates and I visited the old people’s home in our city. The weather was sunny, and we spent the whole day with the elderly there.
In the morning, we sang and played traditional games with them. Their laughter filled the room, making everyone feel happy. After lunch, I talked with an old lady who loved English. I taught her simple phrases, and she shared stories about her youth. We both felt happy.
That day was colourful and meaningful. I learned the importance of caring for others and working together as a team. It was a lesson I will always treasure.
