Critical Thinking
1. Why did the earthquake in Tangshan cause such heavy loss of lives
2. What shall we do to reduce the loss of lives before earthquakes and during earthquakes?
Critical Thinking
1. Why did the earthquake in Tangshan cause such heavy loss of lives
There are many reasons for the large number of casualties(伤亡) in the Tangshan earthquake. The main reasons are as follows:
First, the earthquake had a magnitude(震级) of 8 on Richter scale(里氏) and the epicenter(震中) of the earthquake was right under Tangshan, a city with a dense population (人口稠密).
Second, the earthquake-resistant (抗震的) effect of buildings was poor.
Finally, the earthquake happened at night, so people couldn't escape in time.
Critical Thinking
2. What shall we do to reduce the loss of lives
before earthquakes and during earthquakes?
(抗震的建筑earthquake-resistant buildings, 疏散演练evacuation drill, 提高意识raise awareness[re z we n s] )
Critical Thinking
2. What shall we do to reduce the loss of lives before earthquakes and during earthquakes?
Even though we can’t predict earthquakes accurately(准确地) at present, we still do something to minimize(最小化) the loss of lives and reduce the chances of being killed or injured.
First of all, improve(改善) the earthquake-resistance of buildings before earthquakes. Secondly, we should strengthen(加强ga) earthquake safety education of the public and do a good job in earthquake evacuation drills. Finally, everyone should enhance(提高) their sense of self-protection(自我保护意识).
What shall we do if an earthquake happens
