A Dream Come True Through Persistence
Lily loved painting more than anything else. When she was in Grade 7, she joined the school art club and dreamed of winning the City Teen Art Competition. However, her first try ended in failure—her painting didn’t even make it to the final round. Some classmates laughed at her, saying she “lacked talent,” but Lily refused to give up.
She decided to turn her dream into reality. First, she asked her art teacher for advice. The teacher told her, “Talent helps, but persistence is what truly makes it happen.” Following the advice, Lily made a strict plan. Every evening after finishing homework, she practiced painting for two hours. She studied famous artists’ works, visited art galleries on weekends, and even took online courses to improve her skills.
There were many difficult moments. Once, she spent three weeks on a landscape painting, but accidentally spilled water on it. Instead of crying, she started over the next day. Another time, she felt so tired that she wanted to quit, but she looked at her old paintings and remembered how much she loved art. “I can’t stop now,” she told herself.
After a year of hard work, Lily entered the competition again. This time, her painting—showing a girl chasing a rainbow—stood out. The judges praised it for its creativity and the strong feeling of hope. When Lily heard her name announced as the winner, she couldn’t hold back her tears. She realized that success wasn’t about being perfect at first, but about keeping going even when things get hard.
Lily’s story teaches us that every dream is possible if we have the courage to try and the persistence to keep going. As long as we don’t give up, we can always make it happen.

③ Gave up other after-school activities ④ Learned from famous artists’ works

( )8. The underlined phrase “make it happen” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. realize the dream B. win the competition
C. become an artist D. make a plan
( ) 9. What can we infer from Lily’s experience
A. Talent is more important than persistence.

An Important Invention
In my opinion, mobile payment is one of the most important inventions for people. It refers to paying for goods or services through mobile apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay, without using cash or physical cards.
Mobile payment is important for several reasons. First, it’s extremely convenient. We can pay anytime and anywhere with just a smartphone, whether we’re shopping in stores, ordering food online or paying bills. Second, it’s safe. It avoids the risk of losing cash or being given fake money. Besides, it promotes the development of other services, such as online shopping and shared bikes, making our lives more efficient.
In short, mobile payment has greatly changed the way we live and interact with the world. It’s not just a payment tool, but a symbol of technological progress that makes our daily lives easier and better.
