To develop one’s taste
in English, the most effective way is to read English books widely.Yet
one may be at a loss to choose the proper books, especially as a
beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my reading
experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice,
recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book
for English learners. But my experience was somewhat horrible.I had great
difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it.It’s not the
vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs
sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed rather unfamiliar to
me at that time.My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading
Hemingway’s novel — A Farewell to Arms.No long and puzzling
sentences. And I particularly liked his brief style. So my first suggestion
is, as a beginner, you’d better choose modern novels instead of
classical ones.
However, if you limit yourself to novels, you will miss a lot of
treasures.Besides, English essays also play a key role. They can at once
inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best
example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you
cannot help feeling the elegance and the special sense of humor. His simple
language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary
people. Therefore, here comes my second suggestion — essays are also
vital.
Never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly,
however famous or influential the person might be.We should be open to
various ideas, but always think independently and determine for
ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s
poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers
through reading and develop our fine taste in English.

A Man Keeps A Language Alive
Chana, a native language of Argentina, was thought to be extinct
for over 200 years. However, it has now been discovered that one man
has been keeping it alive.
Blas Jaime, an 89-year-old Argentinian, has kept the language
from dying out. Thanks to the efforts of linguist (语言学家) Jose
Barros, Blas was discovered.Blas learnt the language from his mother
who taught him the Chana language and stories and asked him to keep
them secret in order to “protect” the family.Years later, Blas began to
look for other Chana people, only to find that no one else knew the
language and that linguists had considered it extinct since 1815.
“I am alive.I am here,” Blas said.Together with Barros, he
created a dictionary with over 1,000 Chana words. He was the subject of
several documentaries. He has appeared in an educational cartoon about
the Chana. He also delivered a TED Talk in 2018 to honor Argentina’s
indigenous (土著的) history.
The Chana are an indigenous people whose history dates back 2,000
years. All the ups and downs in history have led to a gap between modern-
day Argentinians and their indigenous roots.Blas’s work has inspired
many of them to relate to their early family and history.
Blas’s daughter Evangelina is now teaching what she has learnt
from her father to others and her own son.Although the exact number of
Chana people remaining in Argentina is uncertain, the family’s efforts
and others like them are helping to keep the Chana language and culture
alive.

of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending
on where you live.People can also have completely different ways of

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is asking the public to help
it add new words.Editors want to find the regional (地区的) differences
in English around the world. They want to increase its record of the
language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation
teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more
than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One
was “cuddy wifter”, which means “a left-handed person”.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the
world.Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the reaction has been
great.Editors are listing a number of suggestions to include in the
dictionary. These include Hawaii’s “hammajang”, which means “in
a disorderly state”.Another is the word for a swimsuit, “dookers” or
“duckers”.It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word “frog-drowner”, which
Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain.Another possibility is
“brick”.It means “very cold” used by people in New Jersey and New
York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a
picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”.It might also
be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.
“The OED aims to cover all types of English,” Maier said. That
includes scientific words, slang (俚语) and regional language.Maier
also said that it can be difficult for the OED’s editors to identify regional
words.Because the terms are more often spoken than written down.
The project is called Words Where You Are.It is looking for more
suggestions.“We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional
words we were able to include,” said Maier.

  (2024·东营高一上期中)Language changes all the time.New
words and phrases appear. The words used by young people in the UK are
different from those used by adults.Living in a multicultural (多元文化
的) society has an effect on language, especially on the language of the
young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can’t find
in many dictionaries. These extremely informal words and expressions are
known as “slang”.It is not possible to make a complete list of modern
British slang — by the time the list was finished, it would be out of
date! New words come and go like fashion.
However, not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it.A
school in Sheffield, in the north of England, recently instructed its
students to stop using slang words. The headteacher says that if young
people learn to speak “correctly”, it will help them get a place at
university and a good job.
When British people use language like this, it’s not surprising that
some international students say they can’t understand native
speakers. But perhaps learners don’t need to worry about communicating
with native speakers so much.Research shows that most of the English
spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the
language. In fact, when we think about “International English”, there
is no such thing as a native or a non-native speaker.
So, how important is it to understand these slang words and
expressions? If you watch films or television programs in English, read
magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English
song lyrics (歌词), then understanding slang can be very useful.

  (2025·河南九校联盟高一上月考)Sarah Todd Hammer was
attending a dancing class in April 2010 when she experienced a sudden
head and neck ache that she couldn’t shake.Within minutes, the pain
was so insufferable that she started crying, meanwhile she realized that
her arms and hands were unable to move.
While undoubtedly terrified out of her wits , Hammer had no
idea what was happening and there was no way of knowing she was
experiencing a life-changing event. She was taken to the nearest
children’s hospital.Later, she was told that she developed a spinal cord
injury (脊髓损伤).
“After two months, I was able to walk out of the hospital with
help. From there, I did outpatient physical and occupational therapy (理
疗) for a few hours a week,” Hammer said.Although she’s managed
to regain some movement, Hammer explained that she couldn’t move
her left hand at all, and her right hand was very weak.
However, Hammer fought hard to get back into dancing.Despite
trying her hardest, she said the studio wasn’t supportive, often placing
her in the back to avoid being seen. From then on, she noticed a real
change in her mind — no longer did she want to dance perfectly,
instead, she wanted to raise awareness. She started writing about her
story and speaking publicly about disability.
Hammer’s first book was finished when she was just 11 years old,
her second when she turned 14, and the third aged 17.But her work
didn’t stop there. She started a student organization that works for
disabled students on Davidson College campus. She even built a
community online of like-minded people.Now, 22, she’s writing her
fourth book.
Hammer said,“I am proud to be a disabled person, and I refer to
myself as disabled rather than a person with a disability.Sure, there are
challenges that come with being disabled, but that doesn’t mean the
disability experience can’t be beautiful at the same time.”

  (2025·淄博中学高一上期中)When it’s raining very heavily,
we say it’s “raining cats and dogs”. You might even enjoy taking a
break from the heat during the “dog days” of the year.Today, many
dog-related idioms are familiar, but have you ever wondered about the
stories behind the sayings?
“A dog’s breakfast” is an idiom used to describe a total
mess.Believe it or not, this one is thought to come from bad cooking. If a
dish is cooked so badly that no person would eat it, it would be given to
the dog.The saying is now used to describe anything that ends
poorly.Interestingly, for unknown reasons “a dog’s dinner” came to
mean “one who is dressed in an improper way”.
People may say that you are “barking (吠) up the wrong tree”
when you are dealing with something in the wrong way. This idiom dates
back to the practice of hunting with dogs. The dogs often ran after animals
into trees, where their owners could easily find them.If a dog followed
the wrong smell, however, they might find themselves barking at a tree
that held nothing.
Many people even describe the weather by using the image of
dogs. The “dog days” are the hottest days of the year. The saying,
however, dates back to the ancient Romans. It was the Romans who first
noticed that the hottest days of the summer seemed to coincide (同时发
生) with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star” and a part
of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座).But even the
coldest nights have interesting idioms and the history to go with them. One
Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for
warmth during cold evenings.A very cold night might need more than one
dog, so it is a “three-dog night”.
Dog-related idioms are a part of many people’s everyday
language.Figuring out the stories of idioms can be difficult, but they
often have a rich and interesting history behind them.

Successful language learners do the kind of things the unsuccessful
ones don’t and avoid the ones that unsuccessful ones do! This article is
about language learning habits that successful learners avoid.
Always being distracted.Being distracted by noises, people walking
past or your own thoughts will take you away from being present.Presence
is of fundamental importance in learning.9.( ) Study can’t make

gives way to more laziness.
Giving up.“The most certain way to succeed,” Thomas Edison
