Bella looks at the pie with big eyes. She puts up her small hand and says, “Well, I’d like to have fifteen minutes of pie, please.”
Mrs. Miller looks at her daughter, confused (迷惑的). “Fifteen minutes of pie What does that mean ” she asks. The three brothers stop talking and look at Bella too—they want to know the answer.
Bella sits up and says happily, “Mr. Lee teaches us about ‘time’ in today’s class. He says a clock is like a pie. You can cut an hour into four parts. Each part is called one quarter. One quarter is fifteen minutes. So I want a quarter of the pie—I call it ‘fifteen minutes of pie’.”
Mr. Miller smiles and claps (拍) his hands. “Very good!” he says happily to Bella. “You are so clever to use what you learn in class!”
Bella looks at her mom. “So may I have fifteen minutes of pie, please ” she asks again.
Mrs. Miller laughs and picks up a knife. “Why don’t you have ten minutes of pie ” she says. “Then there will be enough (足够的) pie for your brothers and all of us. We can all enjoy the sweet pie together!”

Labor education (劳动教育) is very important. It can help every one of us become a better self (自己). In our life, we often see different ways of labor education. For example, we often do housework at home and clean classrooms in schools. And these have great influence (影响) on us.
Let’s talk about housework at home first. Some people don’t think students need to do housework because students are busy with their schoolwork. But I don’t think so. In fact, it brings a lot of benefits (好处). Doing housework can help us know the real everyday life and how to live a good life.
Cleaning classrooms is usually the labor education at school. Teachers ask us to do that every day. We love to do that because it shows our love to our school and we are part of our school or class. When we do it, we can get more responsibility (责任) from it.
Besides (除了) housework and classroom cleaning, there are other kinds of labor education. Some schools let students plant trees in spring or help farmers pick fruits in autumn. These activities make students get close to nature and know where our food and daily things come from.
Study and doing labor work are not separate (分离的) from each other in this world. Many useful things we learn from books can be used in labor. And labor can also help us understand our lessons better. Study and labor work together can help us get a good life and help us be a useful person to the world.
I hope every one of us can take more labor education and make the world better!
22.Which of the students’ activities is NOT an example of “labor education”
A. Chen Jie cleans the classroom every Friday after school.
B. Tina reads English for half an hour before morning lessons begin.
C. Sophia washes dishes and sweeps the floor with her parents at home.
D. Daniel and his classmates help farmers pick peaches and tomatoes.
23.What can we learn from the passage
A. It’s better to separate study and labor work.
B. Doing housework helps students finish homework faster.
C. Cleaning classrooms can help students get more responsibility.
D. Students should spend more time on labor education than study.
24.Which is the best title of the passage
A. Labor Education: The Key to Better Schoolwork
B. Labor Education: A Good Way to Keep Healthy
C. Labor Education: A Better Self, a Better World
D. Labor Education: Close to Nature, Far from Homework
C
Have you ever felt shy about trying hard Maybe you want to study more, but you stop because your friends are playing. Or maybe you hide (隐藏) your book because you don’t want others to see you working. Or you may say “I forgot to study” after a test even if you studied all night. This feeling has a name: “effort shame”. It means that people feel a shame (羞愧) when others see them make efforts. That is to say, people feel bad when others see them work hard.
Why does this happen (发生) Well, first, many of us just want to fit in (融入) with our friends. For example, if every one in our group looks relaxed (放松的), trying hard can make us look different in a bad way. Second, people worry that others will laugh at them for working hard. They may think, “If I try hard, others may laugh at me. They may think I am not cool or not clever.” So, they act like everything is easy, even when it is not.
But effort is not bad—it’s great! Trying hard makes us learn and grow. Everyone needs to work hard to get better. Hiding our effort stops us from being proud (骄傲的) of ourselves.
If you have “effort shame”, what can you do First, be honest (诚实的). If you studied for a test last night, say “Yes, I did”! Second, cheer (欢呼) for yourself and for friends who try hard. If your classmate works on math, tell him “Good job”! Third, remember the best way to do well is to work hard, not to hide it. If you want to draw well, you practice (练习). If you want to run fast, you keep running.
Effort is a great power, not a secret. Let’s stop feeling shame about trying hard. Let’s show the world we work hard and be proud of it!
25.The underlined words “make efforts” in Paragraph 1 probably mean “________”.
A. feel bad B. work hard C. give up D. have fun
26.Some people have “effort shame” because they want to ________.
A. fit in with others B. look different
C. laugh at others D. help others
27.What is the writer’s main purpose (主要目的) of writing this passage
A. To explain (解释) why people have “effort shame”.
B. To share some interesting stories about “effort shame”.
C. To help us believe that having “effort shame” is not a bad thing.
D. To encourage (鼓励) us to stop having “effort shame” and work hard.

28.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
My good friend Lucia is from Mexico. She asked me to her birthday party.
At her party, I saw a pi ata for the first time. It was made of paper and looked like an animal. Lucia’s parents put a lot of candies in the pi ata. They hung (悬挂) it up high. Lucia’s eyes were covered (遮盖), so she could not see. She hit (击打) the pi ata until it broke. All the candies fell on the floor, and we had a great time picking them up and eating them. Everyone shared. It was really fun!
Lucia’s birthday party made me think about how kids in other places celebrate their birthdays.
Do you know that in Vietnam, everyone’s birthday is on the same day Kids do not celebrate on the day when they were born. All the kids celebrate their birthdays on New Year’s Day. Parents give kids red envelopes (红包) with lucky money in them. What a great way to celebrate a birthday!
In South Africa, kids do not celebrate every birthday. But on their 21st birthday, their parents make a key. It can be made of paper, wood, or even gold. Parents give this key to their child, because they hope the child can now open the door to the future life with the key. Cool, don’t you think
In Nepal, a kid gets a special mark on the forehead (前额) for good luck. In Denmark, a flag flies outside the window of a house where a kid is having a birthday. When the kid is sleeping, parents put gifts all around the bed.
Birthday celebrations are different around the world but they all have the same meaning behind them: love and warm wishes. Birthdays are celebrated to make every child feel happy and loved.
