Deep in the forests of Uganda, Dr. Gladys Kalema- Zikusoka does something extraordinary: she protects mountain gorillas. For 27 years, she has been working with mountain gorillas, pursuing her dream job, which gave her the title of Uganda's first wildlife vet.
Today, she is standing on the front lines of a growing crisis: climate change. The gorillas' habitat in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is growing warmer and drier, and water is becoming scarce.“When droughts come,” she explains,“the gorillas will struggle.”
Climate change also fuels the spread of infectious diseases, posing severe risks to both local communities and wildlife. Dr. Gladys and her team work closely with village health teams or community health workers who they train to do conservation work. They monitor the gorillas' health and provide treatment. Each month, they collect fecal (粪便)samples from all 26 habituated gorilla groups, to screen for viruses that could be transmitted from people or livestock.
Society does not always encourage women to enter daring—— even dangerous—— fields;often, it discourages them.“But I did just that,” says Dr. Gladys. When she started, few women worked in conservation. Now, more are joining.“We still have a long way to go,” she says,“but things are changing.”
Thanks to her work, mountain gorillas are no longer classified as critically endangered. Their population has risen from about 300 to over 500 since she started.“At times, I feel hopeless,” she admits.“But what keeps me going is knowing that something can be done. Working with gorillas gives me a lot of hope. It really does.”
24. What is a major threat to the survival of mountain gorillas
A. The chaos of war. B. Deforestation.
C. Climate change. D. Water pollution.
25. How does Dr. Gladys' team monitor the health of the mountain gorillas
A. By giving regular physical exams. B. By treating them in local clinics.
C. By analyzing their fecal samples. D. By controlling infectious diseases.
26. Which of the following best describes Dr. Gladys' job
A. Challenging. B. Amazing. C. Boring. D. Well-paid.
27. What can we learn about Dr. Gladys' work from the last paragraph
A. It turns out ineffective. B. It is quite fruitful.
C. It lacks official support. D. It is very hopeless.
C
The rapid pace of change has been increasing people's feelings of uncertainty. That collective unease can take a toll on society's well-being. Uncertainty challenges people's ability to think clearly, sort through information and make sound decisions. This can make people likely to fall into cognitive traps.
However, uncertainty isn't all bad. It can bring adventure, surprise, and newness to our life. From an evolutionary point of view, it makes sense that people try to predict the future. For our ancestors, worrying and reacting quickly to threats was generally the safest bet.
Today's problems, like climate change or global crises, are too big for one person to handle alone. Not knowing the future can be bad for mental health, especially for those with low tolerance for uncertainty, who are more prone to anxiety, depression, and other disorders. The Internet, while providing quick information, may sacrifice accuracy and discourage deeper inquiry.
Experiencing uncertainty is a bit like experiencing pain. People naturally tend to see this feeling as completely bad. But pain serves as a signal to apply a bandage or rush to the hospital. Similarly, uncertainty is setting off the alarm to pay attention.
In one experiment in 2023, researchers handed out one of two fliers(传单) with a rose to roughly 200 people walking down a busy street in Northern California. One flier read,“Life is unpredictable. Stop and smell the roses.” The other read,“Life is constant. Stop and smell the roses.” A short distance away, the team set up a table with a dozen roses and a blown-up version of the flier that just said“Stop and smell the roses.”
The result was that over a quarter of walkers who received the“Life is unpredictable”flier stopped at the table compared to just 11 percent of those who received the other flier.Paul Piff, a psychologist, said that uncertainty could enhance enjoyment. He also suggested focusing on the positive aspects within our control as a way to cope.
28. What does the underlined phrase“take a toll on” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Harm. B. Benefit. C. Reshape. D. Relieve.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The cause of people's uncertainty. B. New findings of recent studies.
C. The positive value of uncertainty. D. Examples of feeling uncertain.
30. Why does the author compare uncertainty to pain in paragraph 4
A. To give an extreme example. B. To show its early warning effect.
C. To present a treatment option. D. To emphasize its negative effect.
31. What does the result of the 2023 experiment imply
A. Uncertainty possibly increases the joy of life.
B. People are interested in the message of roses.
C. More people tend to overlook peaceful life.
D. People are curious about future possibilities.

The Arctic is a quite different place than it was 20 years ago, when scientists first began giving it an annual checkup—— and its current state is dire.
The first Arctic Report Card came out in 2006, and since then the Arctic has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the planet. About 95% of the oldest, thickest sea ice is gone.Even the central Arctic Ocean is becoming warmer and saltier, causing more ice melt and affecting weather patterns around the world.
The findings were highlighted in the 2025 Arctic Report Card, released on Tuesday.Between October 2024 and September 2025, the air temperatures in the Arctic were at their warmest since at least 1900. The 10 warmest years in the region have all fallen within the past decade. In the ocean, the layer of sea ice reached a record low. The disappearing sea ice means that less of the sunlight is reflected back to space, which is instead absorbed by the ocean, driving a vicious cycle of warming that, in turn, causes more ice loss.
The Arctic Ocean is now undergoing what scientists are calling“Atlantification”——a process where warm, salty water from the Atlantic flows north, changing how waters of different temperatures and densities are层ed in the Arctic, disrupting ecosystems and altering how heat moves from the water to the air.
A warmer ocean helped a powerful storm in October 2025, namely, TyphoonHalong, which kept its strength all the way to Alaska, hitting coastlines with destructive winds and floods. Glaciers are rapidly melting away, and the meltwater is poured into the oceans, raising sea levels. Permafrost continues to thaw, releasing once trapped carbon into the atmosphere and letting out iron and other elements that have turned rivers and streams orange, harming water quality and wildlife.
The message is clear: the Arctic is transforming before our eyes, and the changes are affecting the entire planet.
32. What has happened to the Arctic in the past two decades
A. It has become more inhabitable. B. It has lost almost all its old sea ice.
C. It was the earth's warmest area. D. It has lost most of its sea creatures.
33. What might the vicious cycle of warming cause
A. The sea water is saltier. B. Less solar heat is lost.
C. It snows less and less. D. More sea ice will melt.
34. What might“Atlantification” result in
A. Increasing the salt content of glaciers.
B. Bringing more snow to the Arctic region.
C. Destroying water layers and marine life.
D. Preventing storms from reaching Alaska.
35. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Typhoon Halong
A. The impacts of Arctic warming. B. The importance of the permafrost.
C. The severity of natural disasters. D. The complexity of global warming.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A mind map is a highly effective way of getting information in and out of your brain. 36 A recent study found that students who use mind mapping see their grades improve by an average of 12%.
37 Mind mapping helps you organize ideas and understand topics more clearly. It not only lets you learn faster, but also stores information in your long-term memory better. By adding colors and pictures to your mind maps, you create visual clues that make it easier to recall details later—— like during a test or a class presentation.
People have long drawn idea maps on paper. 38 With mind mapping software, you can easily add and connect ideas. Some programs even work with Microsoft Office and Google, so you can turn your map into a Word document or a PowerPoint slide with just a few clicks.
Let's look a bit deeper. Usually, school assignments are written in a straight, top-down order. But this linear style can be tricky if you find it hard to sort information step-by-step. 39 This radial layout feels more natural and free, helping you generate ideas and put your thoughts together more clearly.
Educational experts also recommend mind mapping for students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia or autism. It works as a friendly study aid that supports how they think and learn.
In short, mind mapping isn't just a study trick—— it's a visual, flexible way to study smarter and remember more. 40
A. Why not give it a try
B. Why does it work so well
C. You can compare it to a city map.
D. All mind maps share common characteristics.
E. It is a logical method of“mapping out” your ideas.
F. Today digital tools make the process quicker and neater.
G. A mind map, however, grows out from a central idea in all directions.

When Shanna, my now 19-year-old daughter, was in Grade 3, her teacher, Mrs.Mathews, gave each of her students a small pot with a bean seed to plant. Green beans are tough and perfect for teaching kids how to grow things. But that little plant ended up teaching me an important lesson, too.
After the beans sprouted and flowered at school, the children were allowed to take them home. Shanna tried to find the perfect location and placed it on a sunny south window sill(窗台) and then proudly declared, “Soon I can feed the whole family!”
Her two sisters were a little jealous, and even our cat seemed interested—— which should have been a warning because when I woke up the next morning, I saw that the bean plant had been knocked off the window sill. Its leaves were torn, and the stem was barely attached to the roots. It looked completely destroyed.
I was nervous about telling Shanna, but when I gently said we might have to throw the plant away, her reaction was not what I expected. “It's going to be okay, Mom,” she said, with believing eyes and a heart full of hope. “The plant will get better!”
Without hesitation, she ran to the bathroom to get the first-aid kit, returning with gauze(纱布), a tongue depressor, bandages, and a deep belief that this almost-dead plant could survive and even grow beans. I wasn't so sure, but I went along with it. Together,we wrapped the broken stem carefully.
A few days later, to my surprise, the plant was standing tall again, and the one bean on it had grown bigger!
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

M: Hello, I'd like to change the shoes my sister bought here for me yesterday.
W: Oh, is there something wrong with them, sir
M: Well, the quality seems to be good, and I like the color. She bought my usual size, but they are way too tight on my feet when I walk, like they' re pressing a little.
W:I understand. Let me check if we have the same style in a larger size. Oh, we still have one pair. Would you like to try them If they fit, I can change them for you without any charge.
M: That would be great.

M: Kelsey, you' re a great wildlife biologist. I heard you became fascinated by nature when you were a kid, right
W: Well, I was fortunate to grow up on a farm with the National Forest as my backyard,so it just seemed natural that I grew a love for wildlife and nature at a very young age.
M: Do you remember your first research experience
W: Of course. It was with bears. I love continuing to learn about them every day. In my future research, I also intend to explore the behavior of wolves and lions.
M: So you spend most of your time driving and hiking to collection sites, right
W: Yes. However, when I am not working, I' ve always been interested in photography as a hobby. My goal is to connect people to the natural world.

M: It's reported that few teenagers would like to spend time on housework at home. In their opinion, it's a complete waste of time. Some even think they should be taken good care of by their parents all the time. However, such life skills are really necessary. China has produced a document. According to it, labor education is listed as a compulsory course for high school students. The labor course takes six credits, the same as the foreign language or physics. Voluntary service, as part of labor education, takes two credits. A recent study shows that 19% teenagers in China do very little housework—— only 12 minutes a day on housework, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Some parents think doing housework can make students pay less attention to their schoolwork. But they are wrong. Doing housework is very helpful for teenagers. It can not only teach teamwork and problem-solving skills but also give them a sense of pride. Through such education, students are expected to develop working abilities as well as a better understanding of the world.
