Chengdu is famous for its agriculture and known as “the land of plenty”. However this wasn’t always the case. In ancient times, the region experienced regular flooding. Around 256 BC, a local official named Li Bing decided to try to solve the problem. Instead of building dams, he used local geographical features and succeeded in building an environmentally friendly irrigation system- Dujiangyan. Since then, Dujiangyan has helped keep the region fertile and productive.
Dujiangyan is a powerful example of how humans can work with nature. In doing so, it becomes possible not just to prevent natural disasters but also to benefit people.
