Plastic is everywhere. According to the United Nations, plenty of plastic waste ends up in the oceans, rivers, and lakes every day. There is plastic waste in the deepest part of the ocean and even on top of Mount Qomolangma. Now, plastic has been found in another surprising place: on the backs of hermit crabs (寄居蟹).
Researchers at the University of Warsaw in Poland have done a study. They found that at least 386 hermit crabs were wearing rubbish. Of the 16 known kinds of land-living hermit crabs worldwide, 10 have been seen wearing rubbish. Nearly 90% of those crabs were wearing plastic waste, like bottle caps (瓶盖). The others wore glass or metal. This shows there are more and more hermit crabs wearing plastic.
Hermit crabs are small, soft-bodied crabs that live near oceans. To protect themselves, the crabs usually wear seashells (贝壳) that have been left behind by dead sea snails (海螺) .
Zuzanna Jagiello, one of the researchers, said that her team first noticed photos of hermit crabs wearing rubbish online. They decided to study this by searching the Internet for more photos. They found many from all over the world, taken by scientists and nature lovers. “When I first saw these pictures, I felt it was heartbreaking,” said Jagiello.
But scientists aren’t sure why hermit crabs are making homes out of rubbish. Maybe they can’t find enough seashells because there are fewer sea snails. Or maybe they like plastic because it’s light and easy to carry. Scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife and their homes in many ways. It makes us think about how we use things and how we can change.

A.Oceans are the most polluted areas on Earth.

Traveling is exciting, but it can also be challenging. Peter, an American student, loves exploring new cultures. He thought knowing a few foreign words was enough, but he soon realized his body was sometimes “speaking” the wrong language!
His first lesson happened in Bulgaria. He wanted to say “Yes” to a shopkeeper offering him coffee, so he nodded his head up and down with a smile. To his surprise, the shopkeeper took the coffee away. Later, Peter learned that in Bulgaria, nodding your head actually means “No”, and shaking your head from side to side means “Yes”. He had been saying the opposite of what he meant!
Then, he visited some parts of the Middle East. After a fast taxi ride, he gave the driver a big “thumbs up” (竖起大拇指) to show he was happy with the service. The driver suddenly looked very angry and shouted at him. Peter was shocked. He didn’t know that the “thumbs-up” sign is a serious insult in that area, similar to saying a bad word.
Even something like calling someone over can be different. In the USA, Peter uses his index finger (食指) to call someone. But in the Philippines, this gesture is usually used for dogs! To call a person politely, they turn their palm (手掌) down and wave their fingers toward themselves.
Finally, Peter learned an important lesson: when you travel, you should “listen” with your eyes and “watch” your hands as carefully as your words to avoid silly mistakes.
54.According to the text, what should Peter do if he wants to say “Yes” in Bulgaria
A.Give a “thumbs up”. B.Nod his head up and down. C.Shake his head from side to side.
55.What does the underlined word “insult” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Disrespect. B.Joke. C.Praise.
56.What is the structure of the text (P= paragraph)
A. B. C.
57.What is the main idea of the text
A.Peter’s exciting trip around the world.
B.The meaning of “thumbs up” in different countries.
C.The importance of understanding body language differences.
