元 宵 节
China is a great country which has about 5,000 years of history. Every year, there are many traditional festivals in China, and the Lantern Festival is one of the most important festivals. It began 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty and falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It stands for the end of the Spring Festival.

Chinese people celebrate the festival in many ways. The most popular way is to watch lantern shows. The lanterns are in all sizes and shapes, from animals to plants. On the night of the festival, many lanterns are hung in the streets and parks. These lanterns light up the night during the festival.
Guessing lantern riddles is another popular way during the Lantern Festival. Riddles are written on colourful lanterns. The riddles are usually short, clever and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character, a famous person’s name or a place name. If someone gets the right answer, he or she will get a gift.

Eating sweet dumplings is a must-do on that day. In the north of China, they are called yuanxiao while in the south they are named tangyuan. Shaped like a round ball, tangyuan is delicious. People eat tangyuan for good luck and the shape of tangyuan means family reunion.

Besides these, in ancient times, the Lantern Festival was also regarded as a romantic(浪漫的) day. At that time, young girls couldn’t go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, watching lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A Chinese poet from the Song Dynasty, Xin Qiji, wrote about this, “But in the crowd once and again, I look for her in vain. The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival. On this day, people light lanterns, eat sweet rice balls called tangyuan, and enjoy time with their families.
The lanterns are often red, symbolizing good luck and happiness. People write riddles on the lanterns, and others try to solve them. It is a fun activity for both children and adults.
In some places, there are dragon and lion dances. These dances are believed to bring good luck and drive away bad spirits. Families also go out at night to see beautiful lantern displays in parks and streets.
