Since we were little, we’ve been told: once baby teeth fall out and adult teeth start to grow, and that’s the final set of natural teeth we’ll ever have. So if you lose adult teeth, you may have to replace them with false teeth.
However, the dentist Dr. Katsu Takahashi has helped make a world-first medicine that can help people grow new teeth. “The idea of growing new teeth is every dentist’s dream.” he says.
How does the medicine work Our mouths have tooth buds (牙蕾) but a gene (基因) called USAG-1 stops them from growing into teeth. This medicine “turns off” that gene. Scientists first tested the medicine on mice. The mice’s tooth buds are like ours, and the mice successfully grew new teeth!
A medical company will test this medicine on people in July next year. Dr. Takahashi says the medicine could help people with “anodontia”. People with anodontia grow no teeth at all. After the necessary tests, researchers hope to use the medicine first for kids aged 2 to 6 who have this problem.

Garbage (垃圾) is the most serious kind of environmental pollution. Each person produces about two kilos of garbage a day. We are making waste products faster than nature can break them down. And we are using up resources faster than they can be replaced.

Garbage isn’t just the bad fruit, vegetables, or meat that we throw away. Those are only a small part of all the things we throw away. Factories and homes produce the most waste. Less than 25% of our waste is recycled.
With a population of more than 1.4 billion, garbage is a big problem for China. Chinese cities create more than 160 million tons of garbage every year. The number is growing by about 10% each year. Once, we used about 3 billion plastic shopping bags every day in China. This was a great waste of resources and caused serious pollution.
In the past few years, we did something to change this. Now we use more cloth bags and shopping baskets when we go shopping. Also, China built more waste-to-energy plants (垃圾焚烧发电厂) in cities to clean up garbage. But there is a lot more work to do. And, you can help too.

In Thailand (泰国), people do not eat with chopsticks, unlike China, Japan and Korea. They use spoons and forks (餐叉). They never eat food with knives. People will cut up most food before meals. If you need to cut up food during a meal, use the side of your spoon first and then use your fork. People in Thailand use spoons more often than forks. If you are left-handed, keep the spoon in the left hand and the fork in the right hand.
People in Thailand like eating rice. The rice is not on the same plate as the other food. Each person eats on his own plate. It’s not necessary to finish all your food. It’s good to leave a little on your plate. If you eat up all the food on your plate, it means you want more.
You don’t need to worry if the food on the plate is not enough. Because the host will ask you twice or three times whether you want more food. It is the same for drinks. During the meal, never empty your cup or glass. When it’s less than half full, your host or your neighbour will fill it again. Never fill your own glass. It’s polite to fill the glass for your neighbours.

Dear Mike,
How’s everything going I’m excited to tell you our school had the Harvest Day last Monday. We picked up different kinds of vegetables, such as cabbage, tomatoes, and beans. Some students sold some of the vegetables we grew. Some cooked delicious dishes. Some made bread and cakes by hand. And we shared the food we made with the teachers and schoolmates. We also brought some food home! There was a sweet smile on everyone’s face. Although we were all tired, we were so happy. We all felt the happiness of labour.
What an exciting and meaningful activity! I hope you can come to join us next year. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
