To celebrate the Lantern Festival, a large gala was held on February
15, 2022. More than 10 different types of traditional Chinese operas were
shown at the gala and Wei Chunrong played the role of Du Liniang in The
Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》), the Kunqu Opera work.
Wei Chunrong is a leading actress of Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest
traditional Chinese operas with a history of over 600 years. Born in
Kunshan, Suzhou, Kunqu Opera is known for smooth body movements,
beautiful singing and amazing costumes.





Wei started to learn the ancient art form when she was young and has
worked hard in this field for over forty years. Her talent and hard work
finally paid off when Kunqu Opera was listed as one of the intangible cultural
heritages.
“When our application proved successful, we were all so happy and
proud,” she says. “However, I suddenly realized that the success also
meant decline and that Kunqu Opera needed protecting.”





Like many traditional Chinese operas, Kunqu Opera faced challenges
from new forms of having fun during the 1990s. Fewer and fewer people
watched it. Many Kunqu Opera actors were forced to give up and work in
other fields, such as acting in movies and TV dramas, singing and even
running their own businesses. But Wei’s love for Kunqu Opera has never
changed. “  ▲ ,” she says.
To help young actors in Kunqu Opera, Wei now teaches them as her
teachers did for her. Offstage, Wei is their friend; onstage, she hopes to

一个诵读困难者的自我证明
I am Samuel. When I was a child, I had to go to a special education
school because of my dyslexia(诵读困难). People around me always told
me that I was different and that I couldn’t do anything like normal kids when
I was young. None of them was willing to encourage me.





At the age of 5, I started to go to that special school called People of
Appraisal. Although that special school helped me a lot with my
communication skills, I still wanted to be a normal kid in a normal school.
At the age of 7, I was in Grade 1 in Creswell Elementary School in
Opelousas, Louisiana. I became an excellent student and my life began to
change for the better that year.





Although I have dyslexia, I always keep trying in my life and don’t let
others influence me. Now I am a 37-year-old college freshman and an
excellent student in my college. Now I do believe in myself and I know that I
will succeed in anything if I try. I’ve learnt that patience goes a long way.
Now I don’t need anyone to tell me my disadvantages and what I can’t do.
