Cats don’t seem very friendly. Unlike dogs, they don’t often play with
people and they stay alone for hours. However, a new study shows that cats
can bond with us like dogs.
Researchers from the USA studied cats’ relationships with their owners.
They invited the owners of 117 cats to take a test that is often used to test the
bonds dogs have with their caretakers.

In the six-minute test, cat owners walked into an unfamiliar room
with their pets. After two minutes, the owners left the room, leaving the
cats alone. This made the cats feel stressed(焦虑不安的). When the
owners returned two minutes later, the researchers looked to see what the
cats would do. About two-thirds of the cats came to greet their owners
when they returned. The cats then went back to look around the room but
still returned to their owners now and then.

These cats, the researchers said, saw their owners as a source(来
源) of security(安全) in an unfamiliar place. The findings are similar to
those found in a study on dogs. Fifty-eight percent of dogs acted just like
the cats.
“This idea that cats like to stay alone or don’t really care about people
doesn’t hold up,” said the scientist who led the study.

五、 (核心素养·语言能力)任务型阅读。
阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
一位外国友人的中文进阶之旅
Hello, I’m Adam Smith. Do you know that many people are trying to
learn a new language these days? Some of them consider it as a hobby,
while others have to learn a language because it is required by their jobs or
study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like
learning Chinese.

It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese
characters(汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem
for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds
like an impossible task, for many of the Chinese characters look the same.
That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most difficult part for me
too. But I manage to learn how to write each character by watching videos
online. Whenever I see a character I don’t know in the street or on a menu,
I just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly I’ve learned the
characters that are common in daily life.

As for speaking, I practise talking about different topics in Chinese in
my daily life. It is the key to practising speaking and helps me to think in a
Chinese way. For example, whenever I go to a shop, I think about how to
say what I want in Chinese. Learning a language is never easy. Basically, I
just use every tool at hand and take my learning step by step, and I’m still
learning new things!

1. Why does Adam learn Chinese?(不超过10个词)

2. How does Adam learn to write Chinese characters?(不超过5个词)

3. What’s the passage about?(不超过10个词)

Because he is really interested in Chinese culture.
By watching videos online.

Long ago, the birds and the land animals had a big fight. Bat hid in a
cave to see which side was going to win.
After many hours, the land animals won. Bat flew out of his cave and
followed them. Bear looked at him and said, “Here’s a bird. Let’s kill
him.” Bat cried, “I can fly like a bird, but I’m not a bird. I have teeth
in my mouth. Birds do not.”

The land animals talked it over and finally allowed Bat to join them. All
was well until one day, the birds returned to fight again. Once again, Bat

四、 (跨生物·食物链)阅读理解。
A food chain is a way to show the relationships among living things in
nature. It shows the path the energy takes from the sun through producers
and consumers to decomposers.

A producer is a living thing in the food chain that makes energy from the
sun. It absorbs sunlight, turns it into energy and keeps it. A perfect
example of a producer is a vegetable. The plant takes in sunlight through its
green leaves, produces energy, and keeps it in the other parts of the
plant, such as its fruit and flowers-which are most useful to consumers.

A consumer is a living thing in the food chain that eats producers or
other consumers for energy. These consumers can be insects, animals and
humans. Insects, like grasshoppers(蚱蜢), eat producers and take in
their energy. Consumers can also eat other consumers. For example,
consumers like lions and tigers often eat other animals below them in the
food chain. In this way, energy can be passed to other consumers.

A decomposer is a living thing in the food chain that gets its energy from
both consumers and producers by eating dead animals and plants.
Earthworms and some insects are good examples of decomposers. These
living things eat dead plants and animals, take in the energy to live on and
put new energy into the earth. Plants use the energy to make energy of their
own to start the cycle again.
The food chain includes all living things on the earth and is complex.
We can understand it by choosing just one group of living things to draw a
simple food chain.
