Moxibustion (艾灸) is a special Chinese

and is famous worldwide. My mother is a TCM doctor. When I feel sick, she uses a wooden box with burning mugwort sticks (艾条) inside. 1 I feel much more comfortable after that.
Mugwort is a bitter plant with a strong smell. In China, people hang it on doors to keep insects (昆虫) away and stay healthy. 2 Mugwort helps remove moisture (湿气) and cold from the body, making you feel better.
3 Some doctors place mugwort on ginger (姜) and put it on the body. Others put small pieces of mugwort on needles (针) and gently press them into the skin (皮肤).Some burn the mugwort stick near the back. All these can help people feel healthier.
TCM believes our bodies have two forces: yin and yang. Too much yang can make you feel hot or sore. Too much yin can cause colds or tiredness. 4

Have you ever wondered what the world looked like millions of years ago Although it’s impossible to travel back in time, we can still get some clues (线索) from fossils.
A research team led by Chinese scientists recently published their research of a large group of fossils. They found them in Zhangpu County in Fujian Province. They call the group the Zhangpu biota (生物群).The biota includes around 25, 000 amber (琥珀) fossils and 5, 000 plant fossils. They are nearly 15 million years old.
Scientists first found the Zhangpu biota in 2010. They kept doing research there for over 10 years and made several big discoveries. According to the research, today’s Fujian Province was once a rainforest 15 million years ago. At that time, the average temperature was 22. 5 degrees Celsius. There were all kinds of animals and plants in the forest, such as mosses, broadleaf trees and snails. Many of them can still be found today. It’s the richest rainforest biota discovered so far.
The best finding of all is the rich samples of insects in amber. Millions of years ago, insects in the forest got stuck in tree sap (汁液).The sap hardened and became amber fossils. Today, the insects inside look just like what they were when they first got stuck in the sap. In the Zhangpu biota, scientists have found more than 200 families of insects, including bees and ants. The amber fossils have kept the ancient insects quite well, making it a natural “museum”.
1.What does the research show?____
A.There were 5, 000 kinds of plants in Zhangpu.
B.The plants in the fossils once lived in the rainforest.
C.Fujian Province was an ocean 15 million years ago.

In the summer of 1996, some strange looking fossilized bones (骨骼化石) were dug up by a man in a dried up lake. He was a farmer in the eastern part of China, who wondered: Could these be the remains (遗迹) of an ancient dragon
Not quite. Finally the study showed us that the bones actually belonged to a meat eating dinosaur, and 1 (it) name was Sinosauropteryx prima (中华龙鸟).It was 2 (large) than the size of a common chicken which lived about 120 million years ago. It was the 3 (one) time to find fossils of dinosaurs in Liaoning, and it was the earliest one with feathers.
So, scientists said that Sinosauropteryx prima might have had tiny feathers, which is similar to the chicken. They have something in common!
It may sound crazy 4 in fact not. Most scientists think today’s birds and dinosaurs are relatives.
However, not everyone 5 (believe) it. Many scientists wonder if some dinosaurs had feathers. Some bird scientists suggest that the feather like structures (结构) may be 6 (piece) of scales (鳞片).Whatever they are, they are not the right size and shape for flying.
It’s not easy to prove this because feathers are so weak that they usually rot (腐烂) away without a trace (踪迹).7 (luck), the fossils showed a lot of details (细节).For the study of the relationship between birds and dinosaurs, these details are very 8 (help).
Yet still nobody knows when and why feathers appeared on the earth. Scientists hope 9 (solve) the puzzle (谜) by studying the area where the fossils were found. “These beds date to a time when flowering plants and binds appeared,” says 10 professor. “The discovery of this area is just as important as going to Mars. ”

The Eye of the Sahara is one of Earth’s most
amazing natural wonders. It’s a special place in the
desert of Mauritania, Africa. Looking from the sky,
it looks like a huge, bright eye! It is as long as 500
football fields. The Eye looks like a big round pizza
with different colored parts.
How was it made Millions of years ago, the ground under the sand started to rise up. Then, wind and rain slowly wore away the soft rocks (岩石), leaving the hard ones behind. Over time, these hard rocks formed the beautiful circles we see today. From above, you can count about 10 round circles, each one has a different color. The biggest circle is on the outside, with smaller ones inside.
But the Eye of the Sahara is in trouble. The desert is very dry, and sandstorms often blow over it. The sand can make the rocks difficult to see. Also, not many people know about this amazing place because it’s far from big cities.
What can we do to help Scientists are studying the Eye to find ways to conserve the rocks from sand. Some people also suggest building a small road or a simple visitor center nearby. This way, more kids and tourists can come and see the Eye of the Sahara.

Amy Carter was a young and promising scientist in earthquake studies. One bad day, when she went to study in an area where earthquakes often happened, a big earthquake came. The ground shook hard, and many buildings fell down. Amy was trapped under the broken buildings for hours. When people saved her, her back and arms were badly hurt. After many operations and a long time of getting better, she could walk with a walking stick, but she couldn’t do fieldwork anymore.
But Amy didn’t give up. She decided to study and work on new ideas about earthquakes. She went to study at Stanford University. There, she tried her best to make better ways to predict earthquakes. She used what she knew about earthquakes and combined it with new computer skills. Soon, she had good results.
Now, Amy is a famous professor at the University of California, Berkeley. She started a company called SeismoGuard. This company made new earthquake warning systems. These systems use many sensors and smart programs. They can find the first signs of an earthquake and tell people a few seconds or minutes before the strong shaking starts. Her work helped many people in places where earthquakes often occur. In 2023, she won a big award for her great work. She also tells her own story to encourage young students to study science. Thanks to Amy, people are more ready for earthquakes.

Ⅲ阅读理解
On April 24, 2025, at 5:17 p.m. , the Jiuquan Satellite (卫星) Launch Center became very bright because of a big fire. The Long March 2F rocket took the Shenzhou 20 manned spacecraft into the sky. It flew fast towards the big universe. This day is very special. It’s the 10th “China Space Day” and also the 55th birthday of the “Dongfanghong 1” satellite’s launch.
Fifty five years ago, on April 24, 1970, China sent its first man made satellite, “Dongfanghong 1” into space. At that time, things were hard. But Chinese scientists didn’t give up. They worked very hard and solved many difficult problems. They wanted people to see the satellite, so they put a big “skirt” on the rocket. The “Dongfanghong 1” played the song “Dongfanghong” in space. It started China’s space journey.
Now, 55 years later, the Shenzhou 20 spacecraft (宇宙飞船) flies again. There are three astronauts in this mission (任务).Chen Dong is the leader. He has been to space twice. Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie are new astronauts. This is their first space trip.
From “Dongfanghong 1” to Shenzhou 20, China’s space science changes a lot. Before, we just sent satellites into space. Now, we build space stations and do science experiments there. The shenzhou 20 has new technology. It can meet and join with the space station quickly. The batteries (电池) in it are better than old ones. They make the spacecraft lighter and work better.
But one thing never changes—the spirit of Chinese space scientists. They love their country and work hard. In the past, they made great things happen with few tools. Today, young scientists keep working hard, too. China’s space science will go further and make more great achievements.
1.Why is April 24, 2025 special?____
A.It’s the first time China sends a spacecraft.
B.China starts building a space station.
C.It marks two important space events.
2.How are the Shenzhou 20’s batteries different?____
A.They make the spacecraft heavier.
B.They look bigger than old ones.
C.They help the spacecraft work better.
3.What was a problem for scientists when sending “Dongfanghong 1”?____
A.Making the satellite be heard.
B.Making the satellite be seen.
C.Choosing the right launch time.
4.What’s the main idea of the text?____
A.The history and growth of China’s space science.
B.How to become an astronaut.
C.The fun of space travel.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad that you are interested in the “Exploring Plants on Campus” activity at our school. I can’t wait to share something about it with you.
Firstly, we took an exciting tour around the schoolyard. Our science teacher showed us different plants, teaching us how to tell them apart. It was so fun that some of us picked up some beautiful fallen leaves. Then, a well known teacher gave us an interesting speech about different kinds of plants in the world. He used simple stories to make the speech easy to understand. Finally, we attended the plant exhibition in our school hall, which was really cool.
This activity was really meaningful. It made me realize how wonderful nature is and how important it is to protect nature. I really hope you can also join in such a fun activity in the future.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
