Wang Mei: It's me! Today is Monday, March 1. The temperature will reach 15°C by noon and drop to 2°C at night. Overall, it will be a warm, cloudy day.

1. Who is on weather duty today
duty n.责任;义务;职责。常见用法:
(1) It’s one’s duty to do sth. 做某事是某人的责任。
(2) on duty 值班;当班;执勤
(3) do one’s duty 履行某人的职责

在课堂上集中注意力并提出问题是我们的责任。

reach 作动词时的一词多义:

reach 还可作名词,意为“影响范围”。

e.g. The temperature is expected to reach 25 degrees tomorrow.

辨析:reach, arrive 与get to
相同点 不同点
reach 均可表示“到达” 及物动词,直接接宾语(地点) ,不接介词。
arrive 不及物动词,接宾语时必须加介词:接大地点(国家、城市等) 用arrive in;接小地点(车站、学校等) 用arrive at。
get to 及物动词短语,若后面的地点是副词(如here/there/home) ,则不加to。
by noon 意为“到中午之前”。“by + 时间”是一个常用的英语短语,表示“在……之前”或“到……为止”,强调某个动作或事件在某个时间点之前完成。这个短语通常用于表示截止时间或最后期限。
相关短语:by the end of 到……末为止 at noon 在中午
e.g. I will finish my report by noon. 我将在中午之前完成我的报告。
By the end of this month, I will finish reading five books.
到这个月底,我将读完五本书。
I like to take a short break at noon to relax.
我喜欢在中午休息一会儿来放松。
drop to +具体数值,表示“下降到……;降至……”
e.g. Prices drop to 315 in the low season.
到旅游淡季,价格会降到315英镑。
3. I learned to plant trees when I visited my uncle last spring.
分析结构:这是一个主从复合句。主句是I learned to plant trees,后面是when 引导的时间状语从句;主句中主语是I,谓语是learned,to plant trees 是动词不定式短语作宾语。
e.g. When I am tired, I like to listen to music.
当我觉得累的时候,我喜欢听音乐。
when 和while 都引导时间状语从句。
(1) when 后接“时间点”或“时间段”,用于表示某个动作或事件发生的时间。从句的动作可以和主句的动作同时发生,也可以在主句的动作之前或之后发生。
(2) while 后接“时间段”,主句的动作与从句的动作同时发生,但持续时间一般较长或主句的动作发生在从句的动作进行的过程中。
e.g. Call me when you’re finished.
你完成后就打电话给我。
Now I am learning English while my mum is reading newspapers.
现在我在学英语,我的妈妈在读报纸。
4. Finally, press down the soil.
press 作及物动词,意为“压,按;催促”。
常见用法:
(1) press down 按压
(2) press sb. to do sth. 催促某人做某事
(3) press for sth. 不断要求某事
(4) press sb. for sth. 向某人迫切索要某物
press 还可作名词,意为“报刊;出版社;印刷”。
the freedom of the press 新闻自由
e.g. Press the button to open the door. 按一下按钮就可以开门。
Press down on the lid to make sure it’s tightly closed.
用力按住盖子,确保它盖紧了。
My parents press me to practice the piano every day.
父母督促我每天练习钢琴。
The new school building was reported in the press.

5. Trees help protect the soil from rainfall.
protect... from 保护……以免(受……的伤害/影响) ,强调通过某种方式使对象避免遭受不利因素(如危险、伤害、损害等) 。
近义表达:(1) protect...against... 保护……免受……,强调“对抗、抵御”有攻击性的对象(如敌人、疾病、自然灾害等) 。
(2) save... from... 拯救……免于……;使……避免……
e.g. We wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the strong sunlight.
我们戴太阳镜是为了保护眼睛免受强烈阳光的伤害。
Vaccines can protect us against serious diseases.
疫苗能保护我们抵御严重的疾病。
The doctor saved him from death. 医生把他从死亡边缘救了回来。
6. Trees prevent dust from spreading.
prevent...from doing (sth.) 意为“阻止……做某事”。同义短语为stop/keep... from doing sth.。
e.g. We should prevent children from playing near the river.
我们应该阻止孩子们在河边玩耍。
The teacher stopped the students from talking in class.
老师制止了学生们在课堂上讲话。
The fence keeps the cows from getting into the garden.
围栏阻止牛进入花园。
spread 作动词,意为“扩散;传播;展开;散布(信息、疾病等) ;使分散”。spread out 伸展身体;散开
spread 作名词,表示“传播;蔓延;散步”。
e.g. The fire spread quickly through the building.
火势迅速蔓延到整座大楼。
Social media can spread information to us quickly.
社交媒体可以给我们快速传播信息。
She lay on the bed, spreading her arms. 她展开双臂,躺在床上。
The spread of education has changed many people’s lives.
教育的普及改变了很多人的生活。
7. Planting trees is also a wonderful way to learn more about nature.
分析结构:这是一个简单句,为主系表结构。动名词短语Planting trees 作主语;动词不定式短语to learn more about nature 作后置定语,修饰名词way。

nature 作名词,意为“自然;本性;性质”。
in nature 在自然中;本质上 by nature天生地
return to nature回归自然
nature 的形容词形式是natural,意为“自然的;天生的”。natural talent 指天生的才能,是与生俱来的,没有经过后天刻意培养而具有的才能。
