Wan Haibo, a 43-year-old deliveryman (快递员), was honored as a national model worker in Beijing. He received this honor for his excellent delivery work and active volunteer work. Wan said, “I feel very excited and proud.”
Born in the countryside in Handan, Wan became a deliveryman in Tianjin in 2018. “It’s necessary to send every parcel (包裹) right to the customer in time,” he told the reporter from Beijing Daily. “The job is laborious, experiencing sunburn and wind. I thought about stopping, but finally got through the difficulties.”
Wan usually delivers 500 parcels per day (700 or even 1,000 parcels daily during some online shopping holidays or sales seasons). He usually starts work at around 6 am and finishes around 8 pm. Sometimes he has to work until midnight.

Zhang Wei puts on his safety belt (带子). He will clean the windows of a very tall hotel today. He looks down. The cars on the street look very small. He feels a little nervous, but he knows his job is important.

Pan Gu, the god of creation (创世), is believed to be the first living thing to have come forth from the egg of chaos. Four others followed—a dragon, a qilin (Chinese Unicorn), a tortoise, and a feng huang (phoenix). These four are called the Four Spirits (神灵) who guard the world in four directions. They joined with Pan Gu to create the universe (宇宙) we now know.
Dragons are powerful and benevolent (仁慈的) symbols in Chinese culture. Dragons can control (操控) water, e.g. summoning (召唤) rain during the dry weather. Dragons are everywhere in China—in legends, festivals, zodiac (生肖), art, names, and idioms. You can always find dragon elements whenever you are learning about Chinese culture.
In early ancient (古代的) times, Feng Huang referred (指代) not to one bird, but two. Feng was a male bird, while Huang was a female. Together, they were a representation (代表) of the solemn (庄严) relationship between man and woman. Later, feng and huang were combined into (合并成) a single female bird and often paired with a male dragon. This is the Chinese phoenix most commonly recognized today.
The qilin is a mythical beast (神兽) that symbolizes good luck and prosperity (繁荣). According to tradition in China, a qilin would appear to signal the birth or death of a benevolent ruler or sage (圣人) scholar. Because of its association (联系) with good luck, and its peaceful, vegetarian nature, the qilin is sometimes called the “Chinese unicorn”.
In Chinese culture, the tortoise holds a position of great significance as one of the four celestial (天体) animals. It embodies (包含) attributes of longevity (长寿), power, and tenacity (坚韧), symbolizing the cosmic forces that shape the universe. The protective dome-like shell represents (代表) the sky while the flat body represents the surface of the earth as we know it.

What’s your dream job How much do you know about it A group of students found a problem among teenagers: most of them have few ideas about their career plans. To offer teenagers proper career guidance, the students started a project. “Our survey shows that 72 percent of students want to know more about different jobs. Li Ming has an unusual work journey. Over three years, he tried 20 different part-time jobs. His work list was different: he worked as a cafe waiter, a library helper, a pet sitter, a temporary shop assistant, and even a freelance photo editor. Each job gave him special chances to learn and grow.
At first, Li Ming just wanted to explore different fields. But soon, he realized every job has its own meaning. At the cafe, he had to deal with busy hours and sometimes unhappy customers. Being a waiter taught him how to stay patient and communicate well with customers. Working in the library made him more careful and developed his love for books.
