Step 1|品教材课文
Give Ugly a Chance!
When it comes to wildlife protection, all species — the good, the
bad, and the ugly — should be treated equally.Pandas, dolphins, and
other cute wildlife are important, but we must pay attention to less cute
animals, too.The world needs all kinds — without variety, our planet
cannot survive. So if you want the future to be beautiful, you have to give
ugly a chance.
Don’t Make Paper with My Home!
Billions of trees are being cut down every year to make paper for
humans.Every tree that is cut down is a part of the habitat of animals such
as these koalas. In this way a lot of animal homes are being destroyed! Is
it right to make animals homeless so that humans can have more paper?

ugly的使用更好地强调了保护野生动物的重要性。

使其成为一个整体。

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·济南高一检测)Nature is more than beautiful for one to look
at.
For Indonesian nature conservationist (环保主义者) Farwiza
Farhan, nature is a silent friend. As a child, Farhan often climbed trees
whenever she had problems, staying there until she calmed down.Nature
has always been there for her. This is why she has been trying to be there
for nature when it needs her help.
Farhan brought her love for nature to her college years. She took a
master’s degree in environmental management at the University of
Queensland in Australia. In 2009, while studying at the university, she
had an opportunity to work with Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, an
international think tank that focused on carbon capture and storage to cut
down emissions (排放), and earned some money. In 2012, along
with several of her coworkers, she formed the Forest, Nature, and
Environment of Aceh Foundation (HAkA).
In 2014 HAkA achieved one huge victory, making an oil company
pay $30 million for the damage it caused to the ecosystem.Farhan said this
landmark victory was historic because it was the first time that Indonesia
had fined a company for burning forests.Besides, HAkA also stopped the
construction of a dam that put an elephant habitat in Indonesia at
risk.HAkA, now a 12-year-old institution, also has programs for
women such as assistant lawyer and citizen journalism training and forest
guard groups.
Farhan said they saw a need to empower women as protectors of the
environment because women are much more affected by the effects of
environmental destruction and climate change. The conservationist said
disasters such as crop failures could affect the financial status (财政状
况) of families, making it more likely for them to force women to be in
arranged marriages to get out of poverty or relocate to areas full of
violence.
Farhan has won several awards and she commented, “The work
should include everyone from all walks of life. The recognition belongs to
all fighting on the ground.”

  (2025·保定高一检测)Wildlife conservation (保护) is the
practice of protecting plant and animal species and their habitats. As part of
the world’s ecosystems, wildlife provides balance for nature’s
processes.Wildlife conservation is aimed to ensure the survival of these
species and educate people on living with other species together.
The number of people has grown to more than eight billion today,
and it continues to rapidly grow. The economic growth endangers the
habitats and existence of various types of wildlife around the world,
particularly animals and plants that may be displaced for land
development, or used for food or other human purposes. This threat is at
top of the list and means natural resources are being used faster than ever
by the billions of people on the planet. The introduction of invasive (入侵
的) species from other parts of the world is another threat to
wildlife.Other threats include climate change, pollution, fishing and
hunting.
International organizations like the World Wildlife Fund,
Conservation International, Wildlife Conservation Society and the United
Nations work to support global animal and habitat conservation on many
different fronts. They work with the government to establish and protect
public lands, like national parks and wildlife protection areas. They help
write legislation (法规), such as the Endangered Species Act(ESA)
of 1973 in the United States, to protect various species. They work with
lawmakers to punish those who destroy wildlife. They also promote
biodiversity to support the growing human population while preserving
existing species and habitats.
National Geographic Explorers, like conservation biologists Camille
Coudrat and Titus Adhola, are working to slow the extinction of global
species and protect global biodiversity and habitats.Environmental
filmmakers and photographers, like Thomas P. Peschak, are necessary
to conservation efforts as well, documenting and bringing attention to
endangered wildlife all over the world.

breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems
that we may have taken these things for granted and not realized that our
planet is getting “sick”.9.( ) More than 15,000 researchers
around the world have written a letter to warn about environmental threats.
Among those environmental challenges, global warming sits at the
top.Global average temperatures have risen by more than 0.5 ℃ since
1992.10.( ) It means that heat waves would last around a third
longer and rainstorms would be about a third more intense (猛烈的) if
we take no action. The increase in sea levels would also be much
higher.Countries that are at low altitudes may be covered by the ocean in
the future.
  11. ( ) It’s getting harder to get fresh water.Ocean pollution
has become serious.Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2
billion, while the populations of all other animals have dropped by nearly
30 percent.Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth mass
extinction in history.More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could
be gone by the end of the decade if action isn’t taken soon.12.( )

gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone, a gas that
protects Earth.13.( )
