Dad: I used to go to school by bike.
Millie: Why didn't you take a bus
Dad: When I was young, there were only a few buses, and they
were always crowded.
Millie: Really But now they are comfortable and convenient. I
like going to school by bus.
1. I used to go to school by bike. 我过去常常骑自行车去上学。
(1)used to do sth. 过去（经常）做某事（现在已经不做了）
e.g. His parents used to live in the countryside.
他的父母过去住在乡下。
拓展：be used to doing sth. 习惯于做某事
e.g. I am used to cleaning the room at weekends.
我习惯在周末打扫房间。
be used to do sth. 被用来做某事，是一种被动语态
e.g. Knives are used to cut fruit. 刀被用来切水果。
Language points
(2)by bike 意思是“骑自行车”
by + 交通工具=take a/an/the + 交通工具
e.g. I go to school by bus. =I take a bus to school.
我乘公共汽车去上学。
拓展：in/on + 限定词 +交通工具：（in通常用于封闭式交通工具，on常用于半封闭式或开放式交通工具）。 例如 in a car, on my bike
e.g. I will go to Beijing in my car. 我将开车去北京。
2. Why didn't you take a bus 你为什么不坐公交车？
Why didn’t/don’t you do sth. =Why not do sth. 常用来表达对别人的一种建议或劝说，也可以表达说话人的一种惊奇和不满的反问。
e.g. Why don't you take a break =Why not take a break
你为什么不休息一下呢？
