A
One of the most popular AI-generated songs
spread quickly on social media last month, getting millions of plays. The
song was eventually removed from streaming platforms, but not before
sending a scare throughout the music industry about the future of artificial
intelligence in music. Will AI replace pop stars?
Many students argued that AI-generated music would not have the
emotional pull of music made by humans. Aleena, a student from
Philadelphia says, “Even if the lyrics imitate a real pop star’s,
whether it talks about love or family, it would never have the same
impact like one created by a real pop star because the listeners know it is
all just to sound good and appeal to the listeners. I like listening to artists I
know having gone through similar things or having the same feelings as
me.”
Furthermore, pop stars often have a unique charm and talent that
allows them to connect with their audience on a personal level,
something that AI may struggle to copy. The music industry is also heavily
influenced by marketing and public relations. The excitement of seeing
your favorite artists onstage and singing along with them is what AI can’t
achieve. This is not something that AI can replicate.
The use of AI in the music industry has the potential to revolutionize
the way music is made and consumed. One of the biggest benefits is the
ability to create personalized music for each and every person. AI can also
help artists create new sounds.

Tamara Hinson examines why space
exploration developments shouldn’t just be of interest to astronauts —
they’re helping to change our holidays, too.
In early May 2019, Blue Origin, the space exploration company
founded by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, successfully launched and landed
the rocket.Bezos plans to use for space tourism. In recent years,
international space agencies and private space exploration companies have
made huge leaps forward in their efforts to explore beyond planet Earth.
This isn’t just good news for those of us with a burning desire to visit the
Moon, see our planet from space or set up camp on Mars, and if you
extremely like travelling, you’ll highly likely eventually benefit from
developments relating to space exploration.
By travelling in a spaceship sent into orbit, an eight-hour flight in a
narrow airplane could become a 30-minute hop, while the entire planet
could be circumnavigated in just 90 minutes.
Recent developments suggest such journeys might soon become
reality, largely thanks to the number of privately-funded space
exploration adventures, like Musk’s SpaceX.
“It’s not just about national space agencies any more and
commercial companies all over the world are doing their own thing,”
points out Bresnik, who admits to being surprised at the developments
made in a relatively short space of time. “In the 1900s we had the first
flight, and suddenly all these other people were building airplanes. And
now, just over 100 years later, there are generations who think it’s
perfectly normal to simply book a flight on their iPhone. And we’re at
the same point with space flight; you’ll soon be able to go to space
without being a professional astronaut.”
All of these developments and the research and testing which comes
beforehand serve another purpose. They make getting to Mars — the little
red dot our descendants (后代) could very well end up living on much
easier, although there are still various obstacles. Bresnik states that he
suspects a trip into space will soon be as simple as a trip to Disneyland
even if the famous theme park has certain advantages, such as more
reliable supplies of food, water, and oxygen, believing we’re close
to overcoming all obstacles and pointing out that one potential solution
would be to take seeds instead of food, and use regenerative techniques
to reclaim water.

A
Aircraft are some of the most complex
vehicles out there, which need a great energy supply. If you tried to
design an airplane supported by today’s batteries, you would have to
take out all the passengers and goods and fill that space with batteries just
to fly for under an hour. Jet fuel can hold about 50 times more energy
compared to batteries per unit mass. To close that gap, we need to make
batteries lighter in the future. New batteries are being developed, but
they aren’t yet ready for providing any aircraft with energy
independently.
However, we can get some benefits by using hybrid propulsion
Hybrid aircraft use a combination of
batteries and jet fuel. Using batteries as a power assist during take-off and
climb is a very promising option. Taxiing (滑行) to the runway by
using just electric power could also save a significant amount of jet fuel.
There is a sweet spot between how much electricity used from the battery
and how much jet fuel used for the maximum benefits. How to get there is
at the center of my research.
Besides hybrid propulsion systems, we can dig deep into jet fuel.
The first option is that fuels can be made from corn, oilseeds and other
fats. But the supply is limited, and using more biomass for fuel could
compete with food production and lead to deforestation. A second option
is using synthetic (合成的) sustainable jet fuel, which involves
capturing carbon from the air or other industrial processes and combining it
with hydrogen. The only emission is water. But that’s a complex and
costly process and does not have a high production scale yet.
By 2050, we could see three to five times more carbon dioxide
emissions from aircraft than before 2020. The International Civil Aviation
Organization’s long-term goal is to cut net carbon dioxide emissions by
50% by 2050 compared with the level in 2005. I think we should raise our
expectations about the goal in 2050 because technological progress is
faster than the growth of demand.

The AI project intends to use artificial intelligence to create an
innovative (创新的) theatrical performance, which is expected to
premiere (首演) early next year. Head of the research team Rudolf
Rosa said, “The main idea behind our study came from Tom
Studeník, an innovator who noticed the centenary (一百周年纪念) of
the play RUR is approaching. This was a key moment for robotics, as the
idea of a robot, including the word ‘robot’ itself, was invented by
Karel Capek and his brother Josef wrote this play.”
“Tom believed this should be properly celebrated and formulated
the idea of turning the story around: 100 years ago, a man wrote a play
about robots; what if today, robots wrote a theatre play about men?”
While there are now numerous papers focusing on machine-produced
art, including some where computational techniques were used to
produce dialogues or story ideas for plays, the automatic generation of an
entire theatrical performance is an extremely complex task never-before
attempted.
Rosa’s team decided to split the production of their play into several
sub-parts.Although other research teams have used this approach to
generate dialogues, few have attempted to produce an entire play.Dr
Rosa said, “Thanks to the approaching anniversary, our main target is
clear and fixed: by January next year, we need to have a play ready for
premiere. As it will be performed by a professional theatre group, we
need to have the script ready in September so that there is enough time for
rehearsals (彩排).”
The researchers started experimenting with pre-trained language
model called GPT-2.Once adequately trained, GPT-2 is able to complete
unfinished texts using similar language and covering related themes. For
example, if GPT-2 is fed the first paragraph of a news article, the model
will try to continue to write a few additional paragraphs on the same
topic, using the existing text for inspiration, while generating sentences
about new concepts.
