As the temperature drops, it’s not just about warm sweaters and hot chocolate. Cold weather can actually have a big impact on your health. Let’s learn something so as to stay safe and healthy this season!
Why Is Cold Winter A Challenge
Winter brings more than just colds. Icy sidewalks can lead to slips and falls. Cold air may also harm your lungs and heart, raising the risk of chest infections especially for the elders.
Fighting Off Winter Illnesses
Most common winter illnesses can be handled at home. However, flu can be more serious than you think. A flu vaccine is a simple way to protect you. And don’t forget the power of handwashing! Cleaning up with water, adding soap if possible, on a regular basis is one of the most convenient ways to stop virus like the flu from spreading. Keep your house warm and your bedroom window closed especially on cold winter nights, as breathing cold air can be bad for your health.
Layer Up: A Good Way To Keep Warm
Staying warm is your secret weapon this season! When heading outside, wear several light layers instead of one heavy jacket. The trapped air between layers keeps you much warmer. You can try the 3-Layer Rule:
Stay Active: Don’t Let The Cold Make You A Couch Potato!
Staying active is crucial for both physical and mental health. If you’re stuck indoors, get up and stretch your body at least once in an hour. Break up your time spent being inactive by walking around your home or standing up from your chair when you are on phone. Any movement helps boost your mood and keep your body strong.
With these easy tips, you can enjoy the winter while staying happy and healthy. Check out further advice on how to stay well this winter on our websites. Stay warm, stay active, and take care!
21. What is the easiest way to fight against winter illnesses
A. Washing hands regularly. B. Staying away from flu.
C. Having a special vaccine. D. Closing the house’s windows.
22. How does the outer layer help stay warm

Not too long ago, I was at the grocery store with my husband, and an elderly man in front of us was using a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) card. The card reader kept rejecting his payment. He had apparently gone over his limit for the month. He was confused and more than a little distressed about the situation.
While I was trying to decide if I would offer to step in and pay the difference the young man checking him out said, “Sir, this happens all the time. It’s not a problem.”
The line behind us was growing long, but the young man didn’t show an ounce of impatience or irritation. He confirmed that the man was, indeed, over his limit for the month.Turned out, he wasn’t over by much, so the checker helped the customer determine which two or three items that he could make do without until his account was topped up.
“You’ ll definitely want to keep the milk and the butter and the eggs and the bread.” Then the clerk pulled out a jar of salsa, a bottle of juice and some crackers that he and his customer agreed could wait until the beginning of the new month.
The young man assured his older customer, once again, that this was a common occurrence and not a problem at all. The man left with his dignity intact (完好无损的) and, no doubt, with a renewed sense of loyalty to that grocery-store chain.
When it was my turn, I made note of the name on his nametag, and when I got home, I sent an e-mail to the manager of the store praising the employee for his kindness and customer service. I got a return e-mail that day with thanks from the manager, letting me know that my note would be included in the employee’ s file and noted each time he was up for a raise or promotion.
While his act of kindness made a positive impact on the life of someone who was struggling that day, I hope my act of kindness at least had a positive effect on that young man’s career — and possibly his paycheck.
24. What happened when the elderly man was using his SNAP card
A. He forgot his PIN code. B. He was over his monthly budget.
C. The card reader was broken. D. He got angry with the store’s service.
25. Which words can best describe the young man
A. Helpful and considerate. B. Clever and loyal.
C. Generous and energetic. D. Brave and diligent.
26. What did the author do for the young man .
A. She praised him on the spot. B. She promoted him to be the manager.
C. She gave him a pay raise. D. She informed the manager of his deed.
27. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To call on people to help each other.
B. To show her gratitude to the young man.
C. To share a story about the act of kindness.
D. To express her sympathy for the elderly man.

Never judge a book by its cover — even if the cover doesn’t say much at all. The first thing customers see when they walk into the Strand Book Store in Manhattan is a table of nameless books with covers wrapped like Christmas presents and titles replaced by general descriptions. The store calls it “Blind Date With a Book”.
People love it, Paul Colarusso, the communications director for the Strand, said, “We put it right at the front of the store because it quite literally stops people in their tracks.” “People are attracted to the element of surprise, which focuses attention and creates a dopamine (多巴胺) response,” Mr. Tobin, an associate professor at Case Western University, said. Meanwhile, stores have found a new way to sell books that are overlooked because they are not new, best-selling or penned by a famous author.
Much like real dating, there’s no perfect science, and an element of trial and error is involved. Fantasy and mystery books work well. Forgotten books from the past are great too. When in Rome by Sarah Adams is disguised as “Freshly Baked Slow Bum Rom-com”. Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade becomes a “You’ve Got Mail-esque Romance”.
But not all bookstores have embraced the trend. Dozens of bookstore owners around the country said they did not know what “Blind Date Books” were. Others didn’t participate in the trend because store policy prohibits returns or exchanges which are necessary if someone has picked up a book they have already read.
On a warm Friday morning, the bookstore is packed. About half the customers stop at the “Blind Date Books” display by the entrance, closely inspecting the neatly drawn, wrapped covers. Heather Toner buys one. “Throwing caution to the wind and letting someone else choose for me just sort of feels like a nice change of pace,” Ms. Toner, a reader, said. “I never went on a real blind date. ‘Blind Date With a Book’ is kind of my speed. ”
28. What makes “Blind Date With a Book” appealing to customers according to Mr. Tobin
A. The ability to choose specific titles.
B The attractiveness of the packaging.
C. The excitement of an unforeseen choice.
D. The identification of dopamine response.
29. How does “Blind Date With a Book” benefit bookstores
A. It enriches customers’ choices. B. It satisfies readers’ special needs.
C. It simplifies shopping procedures. D. It helps market less-known books.
30. What does the underlined word “embraced” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Overlooked. B. Blocked C. Guided. D. Adopted.
31. Which words best describe Heather Toner’s attitude towards “Blind Date With a Book”
A. Open and adventurous B. Cautious and reserved.
C. Tolerant and indecisive. D. Dismissive and skeptical.
D
Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool in ecological research over recent years. By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental materials for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different species have been in an area without having to observe the actual species passing through.
To date, this eDNA process has mostly been employed to detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and other wildlife. However, according to a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, this technique could just as easily be applied to spot humans.
An international team of researchers based at the University of Florida, USA, demonstrated that human genomic (基因组的) information can be easily detected in eDNA samples collected from water, sand, and even the air. While this capability could have practical applications, such as aiding in the search for missing persons or monitoring public health, the researchers highlight significant moral concerns. These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic information being used for commercial purposes.
This issue is particularly challenging for the field of eDNA, which relies on open and easily accessible data. “It is standard practice in science to make these data publicly available. However, this also means that if human information is not screened out, anyone could access this information,” says senior author Professor David Duffy, a wildlife disease genomics researcher at the University of Florida. “This raises issues around permission. Do we need to ask permission to collect these samples Should we bring in some controls to remove human genetic data ”
“Whenever we make a technological advancement, there are both beneficial and concerning potential uses. This situation is no different,” Duffy explains. “We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.”
32. What is the primary use of eDNA in ecological research
A. Identifying species present in an area. B. Monitoring species evolution processes.
C. Improving living conditions for wildlife. D. Sampling insects directly in their habitats.
33. Why is the accessibility of eDNA data a potential problem
A. It ignores practical applications of eDNA data.
B. It may lead to unchecked genetic engineering.
C It could result in misuse of human genetic data.
D. It raises concerns about wildlife disease research.
34. What does Duffy suggest people concerned do
A. To develop potential applications. B. To sample genetic information.
C. To highlight advanced technology. D. To establish appropriate regulations.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. eDNA: A New Frontier in Ecological Monitoring
B. eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy Challenges
C. eDNA: A Breakthrough in Marine Research Techniques
D. eDNA: Transforming Our Comprehension of Biodiversity

As a result of trade, travel and migration, different cuisines have spread across the world. Many recipes, chefs and restaurants try to claim that their example of a particular cooking tradition is the most authentic (地道的). ___36___
People care about authenticity because food traditions are closely linked to identity. ___37___ There home cooking is often the last way to show their identity, British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was accused of trying to take advantage of positive feelings about Jamaica. His meal product had a Jamaican name, but was unlike genuine Jamaican cooking.
However, food consultant Sara Kay argues that there are problems with the idea of authenticity. ____38____ It’s common for majority cultures to have wild fantasies about minority cultures and their food. These expectations can be restricting — restaurant owners have complained that people expect Asian food to be cheaper than that from European cultures.
___39___ while large cities are full of restaurants representing different countries — China, India, Italy, Mexico and more — these labels can oversimplify the reality of food from these countries. For instance, regional specialties in Mexico are assumed quite different from what people eat in America. But in essence, they can both be authentic examples of Mexican food.
A more controversial view of authenticity was stated by American Chef Andrew Zimmern, who claimed that he could present Chinese dishes in a more authentic way than existing restaurants. Writer and food podcaster Ruth Tam points out that while these restaurants change their recipes to suit local tastes. so does Zimmern. ____40____ So, while food and identity are closely linked, it makes sense to give a second thought about the whole idea of authenticity.
A. But is this a good thing
B. It’s a symbol of cultural diversity,
C. That means adaptation is unavoidable.
D. They can generate severe consequences.
E. And unreasonable expectations are the core.
F. It’s particularly true for migrant communities.
G. Expectations can also give a false idea of authenticity.

Our family outing to the all-you-can-eat buffet turned into an evening to remember. The atmosphere was lively and busy, with the noise of plates and the sound of conversations creating a warm and inviting setting. The smell of freshly cooked food floated through the air, inviting everyone to try a little bit of everything. The buffet was a feast for the senses, with steaming trays of dishes from all over the world. The kids were particularly thrilled at the sight of the dessert section, which they had been eagerly longing for all week. Their eyes widening at the array of cakes, ice creams, and pastries, they quickly made plans to sample everything.
As we sat down to enjoy our meals, chatting cheerfully about the various food options, my husband’s attention was drawn to an elderly man standing by the chocolate milk dispenser (分液器). The man seemed determined, but his hands were shaking, making it difficult for him to fill two glasses. My husband watched him for a moment, a concerned look on his face. “Now, how on earth is he going to carry that milk back to his table ” he wondered aloud, his eyes narrowing in thought. He noticed the man’s expression of concentration and effort, and a wave of sympathy made him restless. The kids, absorbed in their plates, hadn’t noticed, but my husband couldn’t look away.
I glanced at my husband and raised my eyebrows (眉毛) with a knowing smile. He immediately understood my silent message. The next moment, without a word, he got up from his seat and approached the elderly gentleman. I watched as he gently placed a hand on the man’s shoulder, offering a kind smile. I felt a warm wave of pride and admiration for my husband. His kind-hearted nature always managed to shine through in moments like these, making me realize how lucky I was to have him by my side.
