Unit 3 Keep Fit
Section 1 Opening page and SectionA 1a-1d
Overview
The theme of this unit is “Keep Fit”, which falls within the “Man and Self” context, specifically focusing on “Physical and mental health; cherishing life”. Based on the big question “How do we keep fit ”, students first get to know different sports items through pictures, and then sort out information about ownership and frequency of doing sports in three daily dialogues. Next, they read three accounts to analyze and compare different ways to keep fit, which helps them realize that “Exercise shapes your body and mind.” After reading a website post, students can internalize their knowledge structure and write about their favourite way to keep fit. Finally, the project task helps students better understand the importance of doing sports and exercising regularly.
Teaching Aims
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. use correct possessive pronouns to identify the ownership of different sports items, and enhance their awareness of taking care of their sports items through speaking and listening activities;
2. rank frequency adverbs and use them to talk about how often they exercise, so as to understand the importance of exercise and develop a regular exercise habit;
3. sort out different ways of keeping fit and summarize the benefits of exercise for the body, brain and mind with the help of tables and outlines, and realize that exercise can strengthen both the body and the mind;
4. write a post about their favourite ways to keep fit and the benefits, using mind maps for support, and investigate different exercising habits to develop the awareness that “Exercise shapes your body and mind.”

Content analysis
This lesson includes two parts: the Opening Page and three daily conversations. The Opening Page uses a thematic picture to show a basketball game among middle school students, helping students directly feel the charm of sports. The second part is made up of three short conversations set in a sports centre. In these dialogues, students try to find the owners of sports items such as a football, baseball gloves and a tennis racket by using different clues. They then talk about how often they do sports. The dialogues also include invitations to play sports together, which shows that sports can help improve relationships between people.
This section aims to help students realize that doing sports can not only benefit their bodies, but also improve their relationships with one another. At the same time, these dialogues highlight the importance of taking care of their sports items. More importantly, students should learn to speak politely and respond actively in social communication.
In terms of language learning, this section first uses real-life pictures to help students identify different sports items. In the three dialogues, students use yes-no questions with possessive pronouns, such as “Is this football yours ”, and Wh-questions like “Whose baseball glove is this ” to talk about ownership. In addition, students use “How often do you play football ” to ask about how often they do sports, and they answer with frequency expressions such as “twice a week”.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this section, students will be able to:
1. name common sports items such as “jump rope” and “running shoes”;
2. sort out information about ownership and the frequency of doing sports, including students’ names, different sports and their frequency, by using a table;
