Unit 3 Keep Fit
Section 3 Grammar Focus 3a-3d (Grammar Emphasis)
Content analysis
The discourse in this section includes several conversations and a short passage. The first two conversations in 3a focus on confirming ownership using possessive pronouns such as “mine”, “yours”, and “his”. The last two conversations introduce different ways to ask about the frequency of doing sports. Based on 3a, 3b further practices possessive pronouns and provides various expressions for confirming ownership. The short passage in 3c is written from the perspective of a person who loves jogging. It describes the habit and benefits of jogging, and highlights frequency adverbs such as “always”, “usually”, “sometimes”, “seldom”, and “never”.
The passage about jogging helps students understand that people can choose different ways to exercise and can start exercising at any time. It also shows the importance of forming good exercise habits. More importantly, it raises students’ awareness of keeping fit and encourages them to exercise regularly, as physical activity brings many benefits to our bodies.
This section includes several informal conversations and a short passage about jogging. The initial conversations center on the ownership of sports items such as “tennis shoes”, “T-shirts”, and “baseballs”, using expressions like “Whose … is this / that ”, “… belong to …”, and possessive pronouns such as “his” and “yours”. The short passage uses different frequency adverbs to talk about jogging habits and preferences, for example, “I seldom jog in the afternoon on working days because I’m busy then”.

Teaching Activities Learning Activities Purposes
STEP 1 Grammar Learning T: Hello, boys and girls! The weather is getting warmer and warmer. Today I’ve bought you some ice cream, but first you need to help me match the ball with the cone. (other examples are not shown here) STEP 2 Practicing T: Now, let’s practice. Remember that practice makes perfect. STEP 3 Grammar Learning T: I want to show you a passage about my exercise habits. Please circle the adverbs of frequency mentioned in the passage. My Sports Habits I love sports and they are an important part of my life. I always start my day with some light yoga stretches to wake up my body and mind. It helps me stay focused and energetic throughout the morning. I usually go swimming on weekends. The cool water makes me feel refreshed and relaxed. I swim for about an hour each time, and it’s a great full-body workout. I often play table tennis with my friends after work. We meet at the community center three times a week. It’s not only a fun way to exercise but also a good chance to socialize. Sometimes, when the weather is nice, I go for a jog in the park. However, I seldom run during winter because it’s too cold outside. I hardly ever skip my exercise routine because I know how beneficial it is for my health. And I never give up on sports, no matter how busy I am. T: OK, now observe these frequency adverbs and try to rank them from the most to the least. always>usually>often> sometimes> hardly ever/ seldom>never T: Great! And please discuss in groups about their positions in the sentence. STEP 4 Practice T: Now I think you already know what possessive pronouns and frequency adverbs are, why we use them, and how to use them correctly. Let’s complete 3b and 3c to check if you have really mastered them. STEP 5 Group work T: Great job, everyone! Now let’s work in groups. One student in each group will be the reporter — your job is to ask your group mates “What sport(s) do you like ” and “How often do you do it / them ”, then fill in a table like the one in 3d with their names, sports, and frequency. After that, the reporter will share your group’s findings with the class in a short report. STEP 6 Homework Create a chart showing the most popular sports in our class, along with how often students play each sport. Then write a short paragraph explaining your idea of what a good sports habit looks like. Match each ice cream ball (with a possessive adjective or possessive pronoun) to the correct cone (with a personal pronoun). Finish the following exercises. Read about the teachers’ exercise habits and circle the frequency adverbs mentioned in the passage. Rank these adverbs of frequency, then observe and notice the positions of these adverbs of frequency and summarize. Finish 3a and 3b. Work in groups.
