【改编自人教选必二U2】
Six months ago, 19-year-old Xie Lei said goodbye to her family and friends and boarded a plane for London. It was the first time that she had left China.“I was very excited but also quite nervous. I didn't know what to expect,” Xie Lei recalled.
Xie Lei is studying for a business qualification at a university in China and has come to our university on a year-long exchange programme. “I chose the exchange programme because I wanted to learn about global business and improve my English. My ambition is to set up a business in China after graduation,” she explained.
At first, Xie Lei had to adapt to life in a different country.“You have to get used to a whole new life,” she said.“I had to learn how to use public transport and how to ask for things I didn't know the English names for. When I got lost, I had to ask passers-by for help, but people here speak fast and use words I'm not familiar with. I ask them to repeat themselves a lot!”
Although some foreign students live in campus accommodation, Xie Lei chose to live with a host family, who can help with her adaptation to the new culture. “When I miss home, I feel comforted to have a second family,” Xie Lei said.“When there's something I don't know or understand, I can ask them. They are also keen to learn about China. Laura, the daughter of my host family, wants to study in China in the future. We take turns to cook each evening. They really love my stir-fried tomatoes and eggs! Laura says she always feels hungry when she smells it, so I taught her how to cook it, too.”
Another challenge for Xie Lei is the academic requirements. The first time that she had to write an essay, her tutor explained that she must acknowledge what other people had said if she cited their ideas, but that he mainly wanted to know what she thought! Xie Lei was confused because she thought she knew less than other people. Her tutor advised her to read lots of information in order to form a wise opinion of her own.

1.Why did Xie Lei choose the exchange programme
A.To have a year-long vacation.
B.To learn about global business and improve her English.
C.To make friends with foreign students.
D.To live with a host family.

2.What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A.Xie Lei's difficulties in learning English.
B.Xie Lei's adaptation to life in a different country.

D.Xie Lei's interaction with passers-by.

3.What can we infer from the passage about Xie Lei's host family
A.They are not interested in China.
B.They are impatient with Xie Lei.
C.They are helpful to Xie Lei.
D.They don't like Chinese food.

4.What did Xie Lei's tutor advise her to do
A.Copy other people's ideas.

The US teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High School in Texas. However, when he learned that the school district was going to offer a putonghua class, he quickly changed his mind.
[过能力 综合提升]
“I thought putonghua would be more beneficial than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language. He speaks putonghua to order food at Chinese restaurants and read social media posts from his Chinese?speaking friends.
While it is a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power,” he said.
Many experts agree that proficiency in a language spoken by more than a billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy. “People are looking at China as our next economic competitor, and interest in putonghua is growing fast,” said Marty Abbott, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We're seeing it in all parts of the country.”
Abbott estimates that as many as 100,000 students are now studying putonghua throughout the US, in public and private schools. She said the US government has designated (指定) putonghua as a “critical need” language and provided professional development programs for teachers. “Our government wants to increase our language competency for national security and economic competitiveness,” Abbott said.
At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes established in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas sponsors (赞助) Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of thousands of students are learning putonghua.

(2024·兰州高二期中)In the spring of 1943, James and Lucy Lo started a photography expedition. Their sights were set on an ancient network of caves in northwest China. Soon after, they arrived at the oasis city of Dunhuang. They would spend the next 18 months at this historic crossroads. And what began as a passion project quickly turned into one of the most ambitious surveys of Dunhuang's Yulin and Mogao Caves.
The Los ended up collecting a considerable number of manuscripts that today make up the largest collection of Dunhuang texts in the United States. The more than 3,000 photographs they amassed have proven extremely valuable to researchers, archaeologists, and art historians because they preserve viewpoints of sites or features that are now long gone, badly damaged, or inaccessible. In June 2021,Visualizing Dunhuang: Seeing, Studying, and Conserving the Caves, a new book featuring several hundred black-and-white photos from the Lo Archive (罗氏档案), was published. It is a huge contribution that furthers our understanding of Dunhuang.
Now the Mogao Caves have re-emerged as a popular travel destination. In modern times, however, the caves face unprecedented levels of stress, with over one million tourists each year. Situated within delicate microclimates, the murals are extremely sensitive to changes in moisture and carbon dioxide. Moisture, worsened by a constant flow of visitors during the hot summer months, can cause salts in the walls to liquefy (液化). Also, because the complex lies in an earthquake-prone zone (地震易发区), conservators say that action must be taken now to protect against further erosion and collapse.
Countless questions remain about the caves' past and future. Can we ever come to know a place as vast and mysterious as Dunhuang Perhaps, but we certainly can't do it by ourselves, let alone in a single lifetime. The Los might not realize they were starting something that would continue long after they were gone. And yet they have brought us closer to reconstructing the past and have driven us to become better caretakers of it. These living histories may still be incomplete, but they are far more complete than anything we could attempt on our own.
