The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in primary school. Small for my age, and more of a book-lover than a sports-lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual (个体的) skills, however, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. When fall came, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to seventh grade and went to middle school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, speeding up my competitive fever. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. As I attended college, my roommate and I even took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though, it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) developed in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered necessary even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
24. What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in paragraph 1
A. Shame. B. Regret. C. Glory. D. Responsibility.
25. In the author’s view, what led to her victory in the Softball Throw event
A. Her confidence in her sports skills. B. The sports talent from her father.
C. Her advanced sports gloves and hats. D. The training offered by her father.
26. What happened after the author stepped into adulthood
A. She continued her passion for sports. B. She preferred reading to working out.
C. She regularly exercised on weekends. D. She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
27. What is the author’s purpose of writing the article
A. To show her father’s guidance on sports.
B. To express her love for sports and fitness.
C. To stress the benefits of physical exercise.
D. To share her childhood memories about sports.

Surrounded by towering redwoods on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, the coastal city of Santa Cruz, some 70 miles south of San Francisco, is a great place for a young person to experience nature. That’s where Xinning Zhang, assistant professor of geosciences and the Princeton Environmental Institute, spent her childhood. “Growing up there, you just can’t help thinking and caring about the environment,” she said. One of the environmental questions Zhang is exploring is why methane, a significant greenhouse gas, is increasing in the atmosphere.
Most of us are aware that cows release methane, but wetlands are also a major source of the gas. Wetlands host a community of microbes (微生物), including Archaea, which generate methane as a byproduct when they consume and digest components of organic matter. These microbes grow in oxygen-free environments like wet soils, which typically occur in the wetlands’ deeper levels. However, researchers have been surprised to find that quite a lot of methane comes from the oxygen-rich peat (泥炭) and soil near the surface.
To explore this phenomenon, Zhang and her team analyzed peat samples collected from a wetland in the Northeast U.S. One set of samples received oxygen treatment followed by incubation (培养) under oxygen-free conditions. The other samples remained in an oxygen-free environment for the entire study period. Contrary to expectations, the oxygen-treated peats produced a higher amount of methane than the peats maintained under continuously oxygen-free conditions.
To find out why, the researchers analyzed all the microbes found in the peat samples. They found that oxygen stimulated some microbes to break down harmful chemicals, which would otherwise threaten the entire microbial community, including methane-producing Archaea. The result is the creation of far more methane than expected.
Zhang’s work suggests that oxygen variability is an important control on wetland methane production. Her team is also exploring further how oxygen variability for different lengths of time, and how different soil chemistries influence microbial methane production.
28. What motivated Zhang to study environmental issues
A. Her childhood experiences. B. The adventure in nature.
C. Her educational background. D. The pressure from fellows.
29. Why did Zhang analyze microbes in the wetland soil
A. To examine the condition of surface soil.
B. To explore the impact of methane on microbes.
C. To study the role of oxygen in methane production.
D. To calculate the amount of methane released by cows.
30. How might the findings help reduce methane from wetlands
A. By changing soil structures. B. By introducing new microbes.
C. By blocking harmful chemicals. D. By adjusting soil oxygen levels.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. How Does Methane Affect Climate Change
B. What Drives Methane Production in Wetlands
C. What Is the Link Between Oxygen and Methane
D. How Do Wetlands Contribute to Microbial Diversity
D
The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. A new study of different plants.
B. A big fall in crime rates.
C Employees from various workplaces.
D. Benefits from green plants.
33. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer
A. To detect plants’ lack of water
B. To change compositions of plants
C. To make the life of plants longer.
D. To test chemicals in plants.
34. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future
A. They will speed up energy production.
B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce energy consumption.
D. They could take the place of power plants.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Can we grow more glowing plants
B. How do we live with glowing plants
C. Could glowing plants replace lamps
D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a Sunday morning,Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing,Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern,“Mom,are you OK?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal(燕麦)for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed. ”
Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help?First,he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly,so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do?Tony thought. Sunday was the day when mom did laundry. Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Tony opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times,so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally,he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START". Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in,and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!.
Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.
