Leaving our hostel in the centre of Phnom Penh, we climb inside our small Tuk Tuk cabin attached to the back of Kivi’s motorbike; a bottle of water in one hand and a sunflower mask in the other we set off on our 45-minute commute. It is a familiar start to the day as we meet two other volunteers. We are setting out to work in an orphanage just outside Cambodia’s capital city.
The morning rush hour in Phnom Penh is crowded and chaotic. Kivi directs our path between the trucks, 4×4 Lexus and countless motorbikes, which often carry entire families. We reach the dusty highway, having put on substandard masks earlier to protect our ears and lungs. A maze of concrete buildings and huts exist along the side of the road among a sea of rubbish. The residents often smile and wave as we pass by.
We turn onto a farm track. The last part of our journey is a roller coaster, jumping out of potholes (坑洼)and turning to avoid falling off the sinking road. We pass huts on stilts (木桩), skinny cows and farm yards where children jump and scream upon seeing us. The stream along the side of the road is almost bone dry and plants are rarely seen across the fields.
Finally we arrive at our destination: the oasis (绿洲) is Samong Farm. By the gates, a group of 10-year-old children are having a marble competition. We’re greeted by the shouts of “Cha, cha (short for ‘teacher’)!” from several other kids gathering round. As we climb out of our vehicle, the sun is already hot and the oasis is as dry as the fields surrounding it. In such conditions you would imagine life to be hard, but you wouldn’t know it to see the warm smiles and hear the laughter of the residents at Samong Orphanage.
Compared to children in the Western world, they have little and yet they give so much in generosity of spirit and enthusiasm for every day. Despite the journey, it is so good to arrive and work in the morning.
24. Where was the author going
A. To Samong Orphanage. B. To a maze of concrete buildings.
C. To the capital of Cambodia. D. To the centre of Phnom Penh.
25. What word can be used to describe Kivi

A. Samong farm is a wealthy and developed rural area.
B. It has rich water resources and thick plants along the road.

27. What can we learn from the story

The ongoing climate change is ready to have serious and lasting consequences for plants across the globe. A research conducted by Liverpool John Moores University, UK is primarily focused on exploring how the nutritional content of food crops may be affected by the interacting effects of rising CO2 levels and increasing temperatures associated with climate change.
The research is focused on popular leafy vegetables, including kale, rocket and spinach. For this project, these crops are grown in environment-controlled growth rooms at Liverpool John Moores University, and the CO2 and temperature levels are changed to look like the UK’s predicted future climate conditions.
After the plants have been grown under climate change conditions, their nutritional quality was analyzed. Early results from this project suggest that raised levels of atmospheric CO2 can help crops grow faster and bigger, but certainly not healthier. After some time, the crops showed a reduction in key minerals like Ca and certain antioxidant compounds (抗氧化化合物). These changes were worsened by rising temperatures.
A key early finding is that different crops have responded differently to these climate change stressors, with some species reacting more intensely than others. “This diversity in response highlights that we can’t generalize across crop species. This complexity has been both fascinating and challenging and reminds us why it’s important to study multiple stressors together,” says Jiata Ugwah Ekele, a PhD student at Liverpool John Moores University, UK.
This nutritional imbalance poses serious health implications for humanity. While higher CO2 levels can increase the concentration of sugars in crops, it can decrease essential proteins, minerals and antioxidants.
“This changed balance could contribute to diets that are higher in calories but poorer in nutritional value,” says Ms. Ekele. “Increased sugar content in crops, especially fruits and vegetables, could lead to greater risks of extreme overweight and type 2 diabetes — particularly in populations already struggling with these diseases.”
28. What is the focus of the study
A. Future climate conditions in the UK.
B. New types of leafy vegetables in the UK.
C. The way to grow crops faster in greenhouses.
D. Climate change and its impact on crop nutrition.
29. What was the condition of the crops grown for this research project
A. Thinner air. B. Controlled water.
C. Higher CO2 level. D. Lower temperature.
30. How does Ms. Ekele sound in the last paragraph
A. Annoyed. B. Concerned. C. Satisfied. D. Confident.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Bigger crops, fewer nutrients B. Faster growth, richer minerals
C. Warmer climate, balanced crops D. Higher CO2, healthier vegetables

Mariah Carey is best known for her love songs, but this week she expressed her distinct hate for a particular enemy: overhead lighting. She jokingly said she was “bothered by the ugly lighting in every elevator, doorway, gym.…Shut the lights. Turn them out. I don’t want to see them.”
Mariah Carey’s words struck a chord. David Warfel, founding designer at Light Can Help You, agrees with Carey. “Overhead lighting is a curse (诅咒) that most of us live under,” says Warfel, who is based in Madison, Wisconsin. “Nothing makes me angrier than overhead lighting,” said Drew Barrymore, a cheerful actress.
There are good reasons that bright light from above can ruin the mood or make someone feel ill at ease. However, the phrase “overhead lighting” has become a catch-all for many types of lighting people don’t like: recessed (嵌入式的) lights, boob lights, LED wafer lights and whatever other ceiling fixtures are on the outs.
Still, designers warn not to completely reject all ceiling-mounted lights. When placed and directed correctly, overhead fixtures can create light that bounces off the walls and ceilings before hitting your eyes, resulting in a soft and comfortable light.
The reason why people don’t like the big light is easy to understand: lights directly above us make shadows and shine too brightly. Also, the light from above usually hits the parts of our eyes that are sensitive to glare (眩光).
So why are the big light and its type so common Part of it has to do with maximizing profit, says Dave Konstantin, founder of Konstantin Lighting Design. And the fact is that often, no one with specific knowledge about lighting design consults on projects. “I’ve gone into multimillion dollar homes that are brand new, just built,” he says. “And the builder has just put very cheap recessed lights throughout the entire house. Many people don’t notice or care about poor lighting.”
32. Why does the author mention Mariah Carey in paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic of the text. B. To praise her love songs.
C. To offer some background information. D. To show her sense of humor.
33. What do the underlined words “struck a chord” in paragraph 2 mean
A Caused strong responses. B. Were ignored by people.
C. Brought a physical pain. D. Started a musical trend.
34. Why did the author write the fourth paragraph
A. To claim overhead lighting is always terrible.
B. To show people’s dislike for all ceiling lights.
C. To prove overhead lighting should never be used.
D. To explain proper overhead lighting can be good.
35. What is Dave Konstantin’s attitude to the common use of poor lighting
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Dismissive.

Robyn became a mother at 21 with Ella, unprepared for it. Years later, at 28, she welcomed Mia joyfully. Tragically, during that pregnancy, her husband Peter died in a plane crash. Seeing Mia as a final link to her husband Peter, Robyn cherished her deeply. Ella, thrilled to be a big sister, bonded closely with Mia during childhood — they shared toys, studied together, and walked home side by side.
But things changed as they grew older. Ella dreamed of fashion design, though Robyn regarded it as impractical. Determined, Ella moved to New York at 19 to study fashion while working part-time. Meanwhile, Mia stayed home and grew increasingly dependent on their mother. Robyn worked tirelessly to support her, which secretly made Ella jealous, but she never let that distance herself from Mia.
Tragedy struck again when Robyn was killed by a drunk driver. At the funeral, Ella was overwhelmed by sadness. However, her grief turned to shock and anger upon reading the will: Mia inherited their family home, while Ella received only an old baby stroller and a dirty doll. Feeling deeply hurt, Ella confronted Mia. “Are you happy now Mom gave you everything while she was alive, and now in death too! Did I even exist to her ” Ella cried.
Mia sighed, “I knew nothing about the will. You chose to pursue your passion despite Mom arguing against it. It makes sense she left you with nothing.” Worse still, Mia announced her plan to sell the house and told Ella to clear out her stuff. Shocked and heartbroken, Ella packed her childhood belongings in silence. Taking the stroller and her suitcase, she left for New York, ultimately forgetting the painful inheritance as she got caught up with work. That same day, she changed her number, determining to cut ties with Mia for good.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
