一、Instruction Aims
1. Be able to properly use the modal verbs "should", "shouldn't" and "could" to express suggestions.
2. Be able to learn to politely offer health advice to others in English and establish the language awareness of giving "reasonable advice".
二、Focal & Difficult Points(重难点)
Distinguish the tone differences between "should" (" should ", with a stronger tone)
and "could" (" can ", with a more gentle tone) in suggestion scenarios.
三、Teaching Steps
Step 1 Lead-in
Quick Response
Present health issues (such as a sore throat, a toothache), and the student uses “You
should(not)...” to answer suggestions in order to review related expressions.
Step 2 Identify the form of the modal verbs and reflexive pronouns(4a)
Ask students to read the sentences in 4a together and underline the modal verbs for advice and circle the reflexive pronouns.
What's wrong
I ate too much last night. Now my stomach aches.
You shouldn't eat so much next time.
What's the matter
I have a really bad toothache.
You should see the dentist and get an X-ray. You could eat some soft food for now.
How did you hurt yourself
I hurt myself when I fell off my bike.
Be more careful next time. If we are not careful, we can easily hurt ourselves.
(2)Summary of the modal verbs
“Should” means obligation or necessary suggestion with a relatively strong tone.
“Shouldn’t” means prohibited or not recommended behaviors with a relatively strong tone.
“Could” means an optional suggestion with a relatively gentle tone.
(3)Summary of reflexive pronouns
Reflexive pronouns are in the same person as the subject.
Common structures: hurt oneself, by oneself, enjoy oneself.
Step 3 Use reflexive pronouns in sentences(4b)
(1)T:Complete the sentences using the correct reflexive pronouns in 4b.
1. The girl cleaned the cut on her arm by ____________.
2. Be careful when you're using the knife! Don't cut ____________.
3. We couldn't enjoy ____________ while our mother was in hospital.
4. Mr Liu knows how to take care of his health because he used to be a doctor ____________.
5. The students are young, but they know how to protect ____________.
6. Her clearest memory is not of the race ____________, but the terrible pain in her legs the next day.
Check answers with students and analyze the functions of to do:

(2)Sort out the core phrase and sentence patterns.

Step 4 Complete the passage with the infinitive forms of the verbs in the box.(4c)

Ask students to summarize what has been learned in this class:

Homework
Make a poster about eyes protection. Try to use the expressions in 4b and 4c as much as possible.
