Where is Dunhuang
Dun Huang is a renowned (famous) tourist city for the Mogao Caves. It is situated in the common boundary of Gansu Province, Qinghai Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Dunhuang, long ago referred to as “Sha Zhou” (beautiful desert oasis), was the hub (枢纽城市) of middle and eastern silk routes in ancient times. The city landmark is an attractive statue, the idea of which comes from the murals (壁画) in the Mogao Caves, a shrine (圣地) to the culture and arts of Dunhuang.
The Mogao Caves (莫高窟), which are famous for exquisite (精美的) murals (壁画) and various sculptures (雕像), are a group of ancient caves which were built in different dynasties. With 735 caves, more than 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 colored sculptures of different sizes, the Mogao Caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art (佛教艺术) spanning a period of 1,000 years.
The Mogao Caves are 25km southeast of the city of Dunhuang, an oasis (绿洲) strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu Province, China.
What do you know about the Mogao Caves
Watch a video about the Mogao Caves and answer the following questions.
1. What problems are the Mogao Caves facing
They are disappearing.
2. How to protect the relics from the Mogao Caves
Reduce the number of tourists, reduce the pressure on the local environment, and keep the air humidity and carbon dioxide content stable for a long time.
Get financial support from all sectors to strengthen the protection of the native environment.
Set up an online museum where people can enjoy the local scenery through 3D images.

Lanzhou, 9 August 2017. A group of researchers and scientists from China and other countries are working together to help increase knowledge and appreciation of China’s ancient cultural heritage. They are recording and collecting digital images of cultural relics from the Mogao Caves, which were a key stop along the Silk Road throughout China’s ancient history. Nearly 500,000 high-quality digital photographs have been produced since the international project started in 1994.
prep. 各处;遍及;自始至终
What are the researchers and scientists trying to do What modern technology are they using
The researchers and scientists are working together to help increase knowledge and appreciation of China’s ancient cultural heritage. They are using digital photography to record and collect the images of cultural relics from the Mogao Caves.
The Mogao Caves have long been a meeting point for different cultures and are part of the history of many countries. Today, the caves are just as international as they were at the time when people travelled the Silk Road. Tourists from all over the world visit Dunhuang to see the caves, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles has even reproduced a copy of the caves and paintings for people to admire in America.
Why are so many people interested in the Mogao Caves
People are interested in the Mogao Caves because they have long been a meeting point for different cultures and are part of the history of many countries.

Read the second paragraph carefully and answer the following question.
By sharing so many digital photos over the Internet, the group hopes to promote even wider interest around the world in China’s ancient history, culture, and traditions. They also hope to further educate people about the importance of safeguarding historic and cultural relics for future generations to understand and appreciate. As one researcher who is working on the project explains, “Appreciating one’s own cultural heritage is very important for understanding oneself. Appreciating the cultural heritage of other countries is very important for international communication and understanding.”
What do you think of the researcher’s opinion in the last paragraph
I agree with the researcher’s opinion. For one thing, understanding our own and other cultures is a great way to understand ourselves and others. For another thing, it’s important for us to protect historic and cultural relics for future generations.

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
Chen Lei is a senior teacher who takes photos of old buildings in Wuhan in order to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.
Every day, Chen Lei takes his camera and walks patiently through the older parts of the city. Over the years he has taken thousands of pictures of old buildings to create a record for his fellow citizens in the present and future. Another important part of his project are the interviews he conducts with elderly residents. Often these stories help to bring the interesting histories of the buildings to life, giving them their place in the human stories of Wuhan’s citizens. He writes about the buildings, their inhabitants and the stories that weave them together. He also visits schools to tell students about their cultural heritage.
Neither people nor buildings last forever, but Chen Lei’s photos can help us remember them. The stories that accompany them also help build a picture of life for future generations to hear and add their own stories, too.
