Their language became the basis of Old English.793 Vikings attacked Britain. They soon created a kingdom across a large part of England. Norse words became part of English.1066 The Normans conquered England. They brought with them their version of French.Middle Ages / Norman French became the language of government. Old English gradually turned into Middle English.1400–1600 / The language we know today began to appear.
